A year after winning Oscars recognition for Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan has been chosen as president of the Directors Guild of America (DGA). This new role puts Nolan at the helm of a union representing 19,500 directors, assistant directors, unit production managers, and stage managers, guiding the group through evolving industry challenges.
Nolan Assumes Leadership of the Directors Guild
Nolan ran without opposition to replace Lesli Linka Glatter as the DGA president. Known for his acclaimed films and sustained box office success, Nolan has been deeply involved in the Guild since 2015, serving on its national board and Western Directors Council. His election reflects both his industry stature and longstanding commitment to the organization.
Supporting Leadership Team Remains in Place
Alongside Nolan, vice president Laura Belsey and secretary-treasurer Paris Barclay were re-elected to continue their terms. Belsey, a seasoned television director, has worked on productions such as The Walking Dead, while Barclay boasts an Emmy-winning history directing episodes of NYPD Blue. Together, their experience strengthens the Guild’s leadership during a time of transformation.
Commitment to Creative and Economic Advocacy
Christopher Nolan expressed gratitude upon his election, saying,
“To be elected President of the Directors Guild of America is one of the greatest honors of my career.”
He added,
“Our industry is experiencing tremendous change, and I thank the Guild’s membership for entrusting me with this responsibility. I also want to thank President Glatter for her leadership over the past four years. I look forward to collaborating with her and the newly elected Board to achieve important creative and economic protections for our members.”
This statement highlights his dedication to advocating for the Guild’s professionals in a rapidly changing entertainment environment.
As Nolan takes on this influential position, the Directors Guild of America looks poised to navigate ongoing challenges in filmmaking and production management, ensuring its members’ interests remain protected while fostering creative innovation.
