James Gunn Drops Hints on DCU Batman Casting Twist

James Gunn recently provided an update on the casting process for Batman in the DC Universe (DCU). Batman is set to appear for the first time in Gunn’s version of the DCU within the upcoming film The Brave and the Bold, directed by Andy Muschietti. Although the movie is still early in development, speculation is growing as actors such as Alan Ritchson and Brandon Sklenar have shown interest in the role.

Gunn Talks Casting Preferences and Screen Test Plans

During an episode of The Ringer-Verse podcast, DC co-CEO James Gunn opened up about his vision for who might take on the role of Batman. While he avoided naming specific actors, Gunn admitted he has certain favorites in mind.

I have guys I like. I have guys that are at the top of the list, just like I had people that were at the top of the list for Superman. But let me tell you something, they aren’t David Corenswet, right? They didn’t get the job. People can guess, and maybe they’ll be right about certain things. I don’t know.

Gunn emphasized that despite having favorites, the final decision could differ from predictions.

He further revealed that a screen test will be part of the casting process once it officially starts.

I know one actor in particular who’s a pretty big star that wants to be Batman. We’ve talked about it, but I’m not sure that’s the case.

This comment has added to the uncertainty surrounding the decision, leaving fans eager for updates.

Gunn Acknowledges Fan Theories About Brandon Sklenar

The podcast host pointed out that James Gunn appears to be a fan of the TV series 1923, which stars Brandon Sklenar—an actor many fans have speculated as a strong candidate for Batman. Gunn responded thoughtfully,

Okay, I see what you’re doing. 1923, it’s a really good TV show, like I can’t believe how good that show was.

While this did not confirm Sklenar’s involvement, it showed Gunn’s appreciation for the actor’s work.

Update on the Brave and the Bold Script Development

Regarding the progress of the Brave and the Bold screenplay, Gunn shared that writing is underway but not yet finished.

The script isn’t done, I mean, I’ve got somebody writing a script, I think it’s really good. But it isn’t finished yet.

The film remains in early stages, and its eventual release date has not been announced.

What This Means for DCU Fans and Future Batman Portrayal

James Gunn’s cautious but revealing comments have intensified fan anticipation around the Batman casting. His intention to carefully consider and test actors shows the role will be thoughtfully handled to fit the evolving DCU. With The Brave and the Bold still shaping up, viewers can expect a fresh take on one of DC’s most iconic heroes, potentially redefining Batman’s place in the expanding universe created by Gunn and Muschietti.
