James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, has shared insights into his extended strategy for the development of the DC Universe (DCU), highlighting how the plan has evolved since its inception. His “James Gunn DCU plans” outline stretches close to a decade, reflecting a flexible approach to storytelling across films and television.
When Gunn and his team first took the helm, he had drafted an initial roadmap for the DCU’s early projects. However, this vision has since been refined through collaboration with a skilled group of writers, resulting in a comprehensive narrative arc that remains fundamentally intact despite some adjustments. Gunn revealed that the strategy was also communicated with key executives including Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav, Warner Bros. Pictures co-heads Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy, and HBO chief Casey Bloys.
The Evolution of the Story Across Multiple Projects
The overarching plot, according to Gunn, begins with the Superman storyline, extends through the ongoing Peacemaker series, and flows into multiple forthcoming Superman films and other interconnected projects. He described this narrative as a “big story” spanning roughly ten years, though with some flexibility to adapt as needed. Gunn emphasized the importance of maintaining high-quality content by stating that he refuses to greenlight projects without scripts he thoroughly supports, highlighting the balance between a fixed vision and the necessity to adapt.

“When we first took over, I had written up what the first shows were supposed to be, but where the story eventually went,”
Gunn said on the 2 Bears, 1 Cave podcast.
“We had a basic plan, but then I hired a group of writers who I really respected, who came in, and we kind of worked out the whole story. Now, some things have changed since then, for various reasons. But the basic thrust of the big story is the same.”
He continued,
“That is what started in Superman, continues in Peacemaker, goes to the next Superman movie, and then will continue from the movie after that, and then after that. So there’s the bigger plan that we came up with… It’s like a decade, maybe a little less. It’s very loose, too. You have to be careful, because there were certain projects that were a part of that plan – because my other rule is, I’m not gonna greenlight anything without having a screenplay that I love. And there were other things that haven’t worked yet. You’ve gotta be able to have the big picture in mind, but then also be willing and be able to shift anytime you need to. So the pinpoints are the same, but some of the specifics have changed.”
Current Releases and Upcoming Projects Within the DC Universe
The timeline aligns with earlier expectations for the DCU’s development, which initially projected an eight-to-ten-year era under the
“DCU Chapter One: Gods and Monsters”
banner. While the current and confirmed projects differ somewhat from the original slate, the adaptability of the plan is clear.
At present, Peacemaker season two is rolling out with weekly episodes, continuing to build on the series’ narrative established in the first season. Looking ahead, the next film scheduled for release is Supergirl, which will expand the universe further. Additionally, ambitious projects like Lanterns and Superman: Man of Tomorrow are underway, indicating the DCU’s continued expansion across both cinema and streaming platforms.
Looking Ahead: The Impact of Gunn’s DCU Strategy
James Gunn’s approach to the DC Universe signals a decade-long commitment to weaving an interconnected story across multiple formats. With a creative emphasis on quality storytelling and willingness to recalibrate plans as necessary, the DCU aims to maintain momentum and engagement among fans. This extended timeline allows for thoughtful development while setting the stage for significant cultural moments such as a new Justice League movie and expanded gaming ventures hinted at by Gunn.
As the DCU continues to evolve under this detailed framework, audiences can expect a blend of serialized television and feature films that build upon each other, creating a layered and expansive superhero experience. Staying updated on this unfolding strategy will be essential for fans and followers of the DC Studios’ ambitious vision.
