During a recent conversation, he hinted that key elements of the story are already underway and addressed fan debates about Batman’s iconic blue-grey costume and distinctive white eyes, signaling attention to the character’s design and narrative direction.
Focus on Story Over Costume Details, Says Gunn
In his appearance on the 2 Bears, 1 Cave podcast, James Gunn addressed fan discussions about Batman’s look, including debates over the utility belt, chest emblem, and eye color. He said,
“There’s a religious aspect to some of this stuff that’s very uncomfortable… none of those things are what’s most important to me. What matters is the character, the story.”
Gunn stressed that the character’s essence and the storyline take precedence over the visual details. He also highlighted the diversity of Batman interpretations, from the gritty detective and fierce fighter to the more lighthearted Silver Age portrayal with characters like Bat-Mite.
Inspiration from 1970s Comics Brings Supernatural Elements
Reflecting on his past influences, Gunn mentioned how Neal Adams and Denny O’Neil’s 1970s Batman comics shaped his view of the character. He singled out Batman #225 for its supernatural themes, noting,
“Batman in a sort of supernatural environment.”
This darker, mature approach contrasts with the lighter versions seen on television and introduces mystical aspects that have yet to be explored in live-action films.
The Brave and the Bold to Highlight Damian Wayne and Mystical Themes
The upcoming movie is expected to focus on Batman’s relationship with his son Damian Wayne as Robin, while also integrating mystical storylines involving Ra’s al-Ghul and the Lazarus Pit.
