However, Rooker was not the original actor slated for this villainous character. The replacement was revealed after rumors circulated about an unknown performer leaving the project during production.
Gunn addressed the situation directly in a conversation with a fan on the social platform Threads, explaining the rationale behind the change.
James Gunn Explains the Decision Behind the Recast
According to James Gunn, the original actor brought considerable talent to the role but ultimately did not fit what the show required. Gunn emphasized the actor’s professionalism and downplayed any need for public attention regarding the replacement. He said,
“The original actor was a talented guy and a good guy; he just didn’t work in the role.”
He added,
“He doesn’t need to get attention for being replaced.”
The role was eventually filled by Michael Rooker, who stepped in as a favor during a critical phase of production when funds were limited. Gunn described this moment in a podcast dedicated to Peacemaker, saying,
“Things weren’t quite going well, and so I called you up. I said, ‘Could you do me a favor? We’ve already spent all of our money on our show. Will you help us out and come in and do this role as a favor?’”
Previous Recasting in Peacemaker and Potential Future Roles
This is not the first instance of a significant recast on Peacemaker. In season one, the character Vigilante, a close friend of Chris Smith, was initially portrayed by Chris Conrad. Due to creative differences, Conrad left the project after filming five episodes. Gunn acknowledged that the character
“wasn’t working as well as it could,”
which led to Freddie Stroma replacing Conrad and dubbing some lines from earlier episodes.
Despite Rooker’s involvement as St. Wild, Gunn appears open to the actor’s future involvement within the DC Universe, possibly in a different capacity. He hinted that Rooker’s presence in the DCU isn’t limited to this role. Additionally, there are suggestions that star Chukwudi Iwuji might return in a new character that is “isn’t so humanoid,” possibly indicating the introduction of Martian Manhunter.
