Glen Powell experienced an authentic football moment while portraying Russ Holliday in Hulu’s new series Chad Powers, aided by the participation of former NFL players. The series, which premieres September 30, brings the story of a college quarterback’s second chance to life with realism and emotion.
Authenticity Through Real Football Experience
At the show’s premiere held at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Powell shared how the presence of seasoned football veterans made filming feel genuinely immersive.
“When I was actually on the field, it felt very immersive,”
Powell said.
“Because they also had former NFL players playing with us, putting on pads. Guys that are 350, 6’7, sprinting at me with everything they got.”
This involvement of athletes who had competed at the highest level brought a deeper emotional connection for everyone involved. Powell emphasized,
“It felt very much like Chad Powers in the fact that Russ Holliday is getting a second chance to be on that field; these guys got to put on pads and be back on that field with me. And you could see their eyes light up, and their hearts were full. It was really special.”
Collaborative Effort to Capture Football Realism
The series was co-created by Powell and Michael Waldron, with Eli and Peyton Manning serving as executive producers. Their involvement extended beyond production, linking Powell to Patrick Mahomes’ coach Nic Shimonek and Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator Pat O’Hara. Their expertise helped ensure the football scenes reflected true-to-life gameplay and strategy.
The Story Behind Chad Powers
Inspired by a viral sketch by NFL Films and Omaha Productions featured on ESPN+ as part of Eli Manning’s show Places, Chad Powers follows Russ Holliday, a once disgraced college quarterback. Holliday takes on a new identity to earn a spot on a fresh team, symbolizing a journey of redemption and resilience.
The series offers a blend of humor and heartfelt storytelling, highlighting the challenges and hopes of athletes seeking another opportunity on the gridiron.
Anticipation for the Hulu Premiere
Chad Powers will debut on Hulu with its first two episodes on September 30, inviting viewers to witness not only Glen Powell’s compelling performance but the genuine spirit of football brought by former NFL players and expert coaches.
