The actor expressed his willingness to continue portraying the archer, sharing details about the negotiations and his physical recovery after a serious accident.
Jeremy Renner Open to Returning for Hawkeye Season 2 Amid Salary Reduction
At Florida Supercon, Jeremy Renner confirmed he remains enthusiastic about playing Hawkeye in a second season, even though Marvel proposed a pay reduction. Renner described his attachment to the character of Clint Barton and the potential for further development.
“I love that character,” Renner said, adding,
“I think there’s so much for us to do.”
He also remarked on his ongoing collaborative relationship with Marvel, stating,
“I’ll always dance with Marvel. I’ll always dance with them for sure when appropriate, when it’s rocking.”
Hawkeye’s first season premiered on Disney+ in 2021, marking a significant moment for Renner’s portrayal of the sharp-shooting hero, who originated in the Thor franchise. However, continuing the role has proven complicated by contract negotiations and Renner’s health situation.
Salary Offer and the Aftermath of Renner’s Accident
In May, Renner revealed he had been offered only half his previous salary to star in the second season. He outlined the practical implications, explaining that it would require twice the work for substantially less pay and entail a long filming commitment.
“I’m like, It’s going to take me twice the amount of work for half the amount of money, and eight months of my time, essentially, to do it for half the amount,”
he said.
Complicating matters, Renner experienced a near-fatal snowmobile accident in 2023, suffering 38 broken bones and other severe injuries, according to Men’s Health. His recovery process continues, affecting his readiness to resume physically demanding roles.
He lightheartedly addressed Disney’s budgeting with a joke:
“Did you think I’m only half the Jeremy because I got ran over?”
Physical Recovery and Future Prospects for the Character
Renner emphasized that returning to the role depends largely on his physical condition.
“It’s getting my body right. The timing of that will come, and if there’s still a need, want, and desire for it, then yeah,”
he said.
The actor explained that playing Hawkeye gave him a chance to explore Clint Barton more deeply in a grounded context.
“Hawkeye gave me the opportunity to dive more into the character a bit, in a world that’s more grounded,”
Renner noted.
“I always wanted to do more of that stuff, and there’s the incident that happened, and I have to get my body in shape to be able to sling arrows again and dive around and do all that stuff, but I’ll get there. I’m doing good.”
Balancing Other Projects During Recovery
While Renner focuses on rehabilitation for Hawkeye Season 2, he remains active professionally. He is involved with the Paramount+ drama Mayor of Kingstown and preparing for the upcoming Knives Out spin-off, Wake Up Dead Man. These projects demonstrate his continuing commitment to acting even amid physical challenges.
Challenges of Aging and Physical Limitations
Renner detailed some of the physical hurdles he faces following the accident and with advancing age. He told Men’s Health,
“Look, I’m 53. I’m on the downslide of trying to gain muscle,”
adding,
“You get atrophy, testosterone level’s at 300, no growth hormone in me at all — everything’s going on a downslide. Protein helps with the muscles, so I’m on a higher-protein diet.”
He also discussed the lasting effects of his injuries in an interview with The Guardian.
“It looks fine, but when I bite down, it feels as if I’m going to break all my teeth,”
Renner explained. Nevertheless, he expressed gratitude for survival and perspective on life, saying,
“…But I’m glad I’m here, and I’m going to keep feeding what you take with you: those shared experiences with those you love. It’s eternal, and you take it with you.”

At this time, there is no official confirmation from Disney about continuing the Hawkeye series, but the possibility remains open. Renner’s statements suggest a willingness to return if the timing and circumstances align, keeping fan anticipation alive.
