James Gunn Claps Back at Fans Worried About Two Batmen

James Gunn has addressed fan concerns regarding the existence of two Batmen within the DC Studios universe, clarifying how the simultaneous presence of multiple Batman portrayals is not problematic. In a recent interview, Gunn tackled the confusion surrounding the coexistence of two different Batman stories on screen and reassured fans that this situation does not cause significant issues.

Many fans have struggled to understand why DC is producing two separate Batman narratives at once. Gunn, however, expressed confidence that audiences—especially casual viewers—are more adaptable than some hardcore fans credit them for. Speaking on the Phase Hero podcast, he explained that the confusion often comes from within a niche group of dedicated fans rather than the general audience.

“Yeah, but sometimes. But is it causing anybody grief in any way? I think it was the same thing. I think that people are really starting to learn about stuff like that. One of the weirdest things for me is that big fans are often like, ‘Well, listen, I understand this, but normies will never understand this. Casuals will never understand this.’ But the truth is, guys, that you’re the ones that don’t understand. The casuals always understand. You can say, ‘Oh, yeah, he’s changed Peacemaker, there was some Justice League [characters that] were in that. Now it’s Justice Gang.’ And regular people who just like TV shows are like, ‘Oh, okay. That’s weird.” And then they’re done. But the people who really focus on this stuff, they’re in our bubble. And the people in our bubble think that everyone outside of that bubble is too stupid to understand nuance. And it is just totally not the case.”

Why Having Two Versions of Batman Works

The Batman, directed by Matt Reeves, launched in 2022 with a darker, more grounded approach aimed at a mature audience. It became one of the highest-grossing Batman films, earning $772 million worldwide. This compares to Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises, which both crossed the $1 billion mark, while Batman Begins made $356 million globally.

While some viewers found Reeves’ Batman too brooding and noir-styled compared to previous entries, this paired with Gunn’s DC Universe Batman reflects a strategy to appeal to diverse tastes within the Batman fandom. Gunn’s version is expected to embrace more vibrant comic book elements, contrasting the somber tone of Reeves’ iteration. This difference allows fans to enjoy distinct takes on the iconic character without being forced to choose one over the other.

Both The Batman sequel and James Gunn’s The Brave and the Bold are set to release in 2027. This timeline gives audiences ample opportunity to adjust to the idea of two Batmen sharing the screen at the same time, potentially leading to a notable showdown at the box office between the two interpretations.

Cast Highlights from The Batman

The Batman stars Robert Pattinson in the role of Bruce Wayne, bringing a fresh, intense portrayal of the Dark Knight. Zoë Kravitz plays Selina Kyle, who adds depth with her complex, morally ambiguous character. Jeffrey Wright plays Lt. James Gordon, an essential ally and moral compass for Batman.

Colin Farrell underwent a significant transformation to play Oz, also known as The Penguin, providing a gritty criminal element to the film’s narrative. Each of these performances contributes to the film’s grounded approach, blending noir detective elements with superhero action.

Implications for DC Studios and Fans

James Gunn’s dismissal of fan worries about two Batmen reflects broader challenges for DC Studios as it expands its cinematic universe. With different creative visions running simultaneously, some fans struggle to reconcile multiple versions of iconic characters. However, Gunn’s remarks suggest that this friction is mostly felt within a vocal fan bubble rather than the mainstream audience.

This approach could lead to a richer and more varied DC film slate, accommodating fans who prefer gritty realism as well as those who enjoy more colorful, traditional comic adaptations. The release schedules of upcoming Batman films indicate DC Studios is betting on fandoms embracing variety instead of demanding a singular, definitive Batman storyline.

Ultimately, the presence of two Batmen marks an unprecedented moment in superhero cinema, opening the door to creative storytelling and diverse viewer experiences. How audiences respond will shape future strategies for DC Studios in managing its extensive character roster and cinematic timeline.
