James Gunn Crushes Clayface Set Rumors, Including Batman Logo

James Gunn, the head of DC, has put to rest much of the speculation sparked by recent photos from the Clayface film set, emphasizing that fans should not read too much into what appears on social media. The Clayface movie is part of the DC Universe (DCU) Chapter One and slated for release on September 11, 2026.

Images circulating online include a detailed map of Gotham featuring iconic locations such as Wayne Manor, Ace Chemicals, and the Iceberg Lounge, along with a Batman logo sticker linked to Robert Pattinson’s portrayal. These elements have excited fans eager for clues, but Gunn has downplayed their significance.

Clarifying the Origins of the Gotham Set Details

When questioned by IGN about whether these props and set designs hint at larger connections within the DCU, Gunn advised caution.

You really have to take it as something that an art department put together,

he explained. He suggested that many of the details may simply reflect set dressing choices rather than confirmed story elements.

In particular, Gunn pointed out that some items, such as the Batman insignia, may not have even been part of the original set.

there’s a couple of things that I don’t even think were on the set, like that bat insignia. I think somebody put that there afterwards. But I haven’t seen all those things, but they weren’t something that came across my desk,

he said.

The Role of DCU Continuity Oversight

Gunn also mentioned that the DCU maintains a continuity expert—a person he described as

in charge of the DCU Bible

—who ensures that all aspects, including city layouts, maps, and character appearances, remain consistent across projects. However, this oversight does not extend to every piece of creative detail on set during filming.

And I don’t think he’s OK’d all the art department stuff on that movie,

Gunn added, warning fans not to overestimate the relevance of these set decorations.

Previously, Gunn had shared skepticism about the Batman logo on the set, stating:

Although the trash can is from the set I have a hard time believing the bat was put there by the art department, but if so it never came across my desk (I don’t have time to ok every piece of set dressing.)

Details About the Upcoming Clayface Movie

The Clayface film is directed by James Watkins and features Tom Rhys Harries and Naomi Ackie among its cast. It is one of the earliest entries in the DCU Chapter One slate, with its release planned relatively close to the Supergirl movie, highlighting DC’s efforts to build a connected cinematic universe.

With DC’s commitment to detailed universe-building, speculation around each new release is expected to continue, but Gunn’s comments serve as a reminder to approach rumors with care. Fans will now be watching closely as official announcements provide clearer direction on the story and characters involved.
