Director James Gunn recently spoke about the circulating rumors that Brainiac could be the primary villain in his upcoming film, Man of Tomorrow. Though details about the movie remain limited, Gunn’s recent sharing of the movie script’s cover featuring a brain illustration sparked widespread fan theories linking it to Brainiac.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Gunn was directly asked about Brainiac’s involvement in the film. While he did not confirm any plot specifics, Gunn acknowledged the attention the script image received. He implied that he expected fans to speculate but chose to withhold detailed information about the storyline for now.
Listen, of course I wasn’t unaware that when I posted the cover of the script that there was going to be discussion around that particular topic,
Gunn said.
But I think we’ll hold off from what exactly is happening.
Fan Theories and Possible Cast Connections
Brainiac remains one of Superman’s most well-known adversaries, second only to Lex Luthor, fueling ongoing discussions about his potential appearance in Man of Tomorrow. A recent fan theory on the social platform X speculated that actor Iwuji might be cast as Brainiac. This was supported by another user referencing Gunn’s comments on the Peacemaker podcast, where he revealed that the character Murn’s physical traits would not be made canon in the DC Universe, allowing Iwuji to portray a potentially non-human character.
Man of Tomorrow’s Returning Cast and New Rumors
Man of Tomorrow is again directed by James Gunn and draws from DC characters created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. The sequel will include the return of David Corenswet as Superman/Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult reprising his role as Lex Luthor.
As for the rest of the cast, there is no official confirmation on returning actors from the first film. However, speculation has been growing. Recent leaks suggest Jason Momoa may appear as Lobo and Milly Alcock might join the franchise as Supergirl. The first movie featured a diverse ensemble, including Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant, Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, MarÃa Gabriela de FarÃa as The Engineer, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Edi Gathegi, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, and Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern.
Impact and Expectations for the Sequel
The initial Man of Tomorrow film achieved a Certified Fresh rating of 83% on Rotten Tomatoes and earned over $600 million worldwide during its theatrical run. This success raises expectations for the sequel, especially with speculation around Brainiac’s introduction as a significant antagonist. Fans are eagerly awaiting further announcements to clarify the cast and plot developments, with James Gunn maintaining a cautious approach in revealing details.
