Michael B. Jordan and Glen Powell Eye Miami Vice Remake Roles

Rumors emerged over the weekend suggesting that actors Michael B. Jordan and Glen Powell are being considered for the lead roles of undercover Miami cops James “Sonny” Crockett and Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs in the upcoming Miami Vice remake. Directed by Joseph Kosinski and written by Dan Gilroy, this new version aims to revisit the iconic 1980s crime drama with fresh talent. Although the news has not been officially confirmed by major industry outlets, Nexus Point News, known for breaking casting information, first reported the development.

Background on Miami Vice and Its Previous Adaptations

Miami Vice centers on a group of stylish undercover officers who penetrate criminal organizations by posing as criminals themselves. The original series, produced by Michael Mann, debuted in 1984 and became a cultural phenomenon. Mann also directed a 2006 film adaptation starring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx, which took a modern approach to the story. However, this new reboot will retain a period setting, focusing on the 1980s era rather than updating the timeline.

Project Status and Actor Involvement

Both Jordan and Powell remain in talks but have yet to sign contracts, as their schedules are notably busy. Miami Vice is slated to begin filming sometime in 2026, aiming for a theatrical release on August 6, 2027, under Universal Pictures. If the rumors prove true, this would mark a reunion between Kosinski and Powell, who previously collaborated on Top Gun: Maverick. For Michael B. Jordan, it would continue his rising presence as a leading action star, following his roles in the Creed trilogy, Black Panther, and the vampire film Sinners, also directed by Ryan Coogler.

Michael B. Jordan’s Current and Future Projects

In addition to possibly starring in Miami Vice, Michael B. Jordan is currently directing Amazon MGM Studios’ remake of The Thomas Crown Affair. He has also expressed intentions to direct Creed IV at some point. Furthermore, Jordan is expected to reprise his role as John Clark in the upcoming Rainbow Six film directed by Chad Stahelski, known for the John Wick series and Highlander.

Setting Expectations for the Miami Vice Reboot

The decision to set the story in the 1980s highlights a desire to capture the original show’s distinctive atmosphere and aesthetic rather than creating a contemporary thriller. This approach could appeal to both longtime fans and new audiences interested in retro period crime dramas. While official confirmations remain pending, the high-profile talent involved and the significance of Miami Vice as a cultural touchstone raise anticipation for the project’s development over the coming months.
