Henry Cavill’s Highlander Remake Adds DCEU Villain Star

Henry Cavill’s Highlander remake will feature Jeremy Irons in a major villain role, marking a reunion of the two actors from the DCEU. The project, produced by Amazon MGM Studios’ United Artists and directed by Chad Stahelski, faced a delay in production to 2026 after Cavill sustained an injury during pre-production.

Jeremy Irons Cast as the Main Antagonist

Jeremy Irons has been cast as the leader of a secretive organization known as The Watchers, who monitor the immortals and perceive them as a danger to humanity. This role positions Irons as the primary villain in the new Highlander film, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Irons and Cavill previously appeared together in the DCEU, where Irons portrayed Alfred Pennyworth and Cavill played Superman.

Irons brings extensive experience to the role, having won an Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in 1990’s Reversal of Fortune. His notable career includes appearances in The Lion King (1994), Die Hard with a Vengeance (1995), The Man in the Iron Mask (1998), Dungeons & Dragons (2000), Assassin’s Creed (2016), House of Gucci (2021), and the upcoming The Beekeeper (2024).

Main Cast and Production Details for the Highlander Reboot

The Highlander cast also includes Russell Crowe as Ramirez and Dave Bautista as The Kurgan, two iconic characters from the original film. Karen Gillan plays Connor MacLeod’s wife, while Marisa Abela is cast as his modern romantic interest. Djimon Hounsou takes on the role of an African warrior, and both Max Zhang and Drew McIntyre have been added to the ensemble.

Michael Finch wrote the screenplay, with production led by Scott Stuber and Nick Nesbitt of United Artists. Neal H. Moritz, Chad Stahelski’s 87Eleven Entertainment, Josh Davis of Davis Panzer Productions, and Louise Rosner are also producing the remake. Although no release date has been announced for the film, the original 1986 Highlander, directed by Russell Mulcahy and starring Christopher Lambert, remains accessible on streaming platforms such as Prime Video and Peacock.

Anticipation and Future Prospects for the Highlander Remake

The addition of Jeremy Irons heightens interest in this Highlander reboot, promising a compelling dynamic alongside Henry Cavill’s portrayal of Connor MacLeod. With a strong supporting cast and experienced producers, the remake is positioned to reinvigorate the franchise while honoring the classic 1986 film. Fans will likely watch closely for updates on production progress and a confirmed release schedule.
