Jason Blum, founder and CEO of Blumhouse Productions, will be presented with the annual Milestone Award by the Producers Guild of America on February 28, 2026, at the 37th Annual Producers Guild Awards. The award recognizes his groundbreaking contributions to the motion picture industry and his impact on independent filmmaking.
Industry Leaders Praise Blum’s Influence on Independent Film
Producers Guild Presidents Stephanie Allain and Donald De Line highlighted Blum’s transformative effect on the filmmaking landscape, stating that
“Jason Blum has redefined what’s possible in independent filmmaking, proving that bold vision and creative ingenuity can create global cultural touchstones, even with modest resources,”
and recognizing how
“Through Blumhouse, he has championed fearless storytellers, nurtured fresh voices and established a body of work that spans some of the most successful and inventive films and series of our time. We are proud to recognize his remarkable contributions with the Milestone Award.”
A Legacy Among Cinema’s Most Respected Creators
Blum becomes part of an elite cohort of producers, directors, and industry figures previously awarded the Milestone Award, including filmmakers Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, James Cameron, Cecil B. DeMille, and Alfred Hitchcock. The accolade has also been bestowed on influential producers and executives like Kathleen Kennedy, Michael De Luca, Pamela Abdy, Bob Iger, Amy Pascal, and Michael Lynton, underscoring the importance of Blum’s achievements within this distinguished group.
Blum Expresses Gratitude for Industry Recognition
Upon receiving news of the award, Jason Blum shared his appreciation:
“I’m moved to be recognized by my peers with this year’s Milestone Award,”
he said.
“Fifteen years ago, I was a struggling independent producer, and I could never have imagined receiving an honor like this. I’m grateful to Stephanie, Donald, and the PGA for this recognition. The journey here is thanks to our small but mighty team of talented weirdos at Blumhouse, who dedicate themselves every day to the idea that strangers love to be afraid together in the dark; to the audiences who keep showing up for that experience; and, of course, to the brilliant filmmakers, actors, writers, and crew who have entrusted us along the way.”
Blumhouse’s Rise and Impact in Horror Filmmaking
Founded by Jason Blum in 2000, Blumhouse Productions quickly gained acclaim for its cost-efficient, innovative approach to horror films. One of the company’s earliest landmarks was the 2009 low-budget hit Paranormal Activity, produced for only $15,000 with additional post-production funded by Paramount, which grossed more than $190 million worldwide and launched a successful franchise. This film model showcased the potential of minimalist horror to achieve major commercial success.

Ongoing Success and Expanding Horror Franchises
Since then, Blumhouse has become synonymous with several horror franchises including Insidious, The Purge, and Happy Death Day. The company continues to develop major titles, with sequels planned for M3GAN, The Black Phone, and Five Nights at Freddy’s, the latter being Blumhouse’s highest-grossing film. The studio also extends its reach by producing sequels and reboots in established horror series such as Halloween and Universal’s classic monster films, including The Invisible Man and Wolf Man. Notably, Blumhouse secured the rights to the Saw franchise in June 2025, signaling further expansion.
Diverse Recognition Beyond Horror
Jason Blum’s achievements extend past the horror genre. He has received three Academy Award nominations for Best Picture as a producer on Get Out, Whiplash, and BlacKkKlansman, with the latter two not falling within horror. His accolades include two Primetime Emmy Awards: Outstanding Television Movie in 2014 for The Normal Heart and Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series in 2015 for The Jinx. Additionally, he was nominated for Outstanding Limited Series in 2019 for Sharp Objects.
