Jerry Bruckheimer Reveals Margot Robbie Still in Pirates Plans

Jerry Bruckheimer has affirmed that a Pirates of the Caribbean film featuring Margot Robbie remains under development, contradicting earlier comments from the Barbie star suggesting Disney had abandoned the project. Speaking to The Wrap, Bruckheimer provided an update amid ongoing uncertainty surrounding the franchise’s spin-offs.

He explained,

“We’re working on a script. It’s always on the page; if we don’t have it on the page, it’s not gonna get on the screen. We had two scripts at one point, and then one kinda dropped out, and then we kinda went on with the other one.”

This statement raised questions about which script had been set aside, as reports had indicated Robbie’s take—a more female-focused storyline—was the one shelved. Bruckheimer, however, clarified, “Well, she’s still involved.”

Margot Robbie’s Previous Comments on the Project

Earlier statements from Margot Robbie painted a less optimistic picture of the project’s prospects. In a November 2022 interview with Vanity Fair, she reflected on the previously considered storyline, saying,

“We had an idea and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led – not totally female-led, but just a different kind of story – which we thought would’ve been really cool, but I guess they don’t want to do it.”

Her remarks suggested the film had stalled, at least in her perspective, contributing to confusion about the franchise’s direction and the involvement of key figures.

Orlando Bloom Expresses Interest in Returning to the Franchise

Adding to the evolving situation, Orlando Bloom, known for portraying Will Turner throughout the series, shared his enthusiasm for a possible sixth Pirates installment. On This Morning, he stated,

“There’s been talk. I can’t say anything at the moment, because I really don’t know. They’re definitely… I think they’re trying to work out what it would all look like.”

Bloom further expressed hope to reunite with co-stars, saying,

“I, personally, think it would be great to get the band back together. That would be great. But there are always different ideas, so we’ll see where it lands.”

Bloom has been a key figure in the series, starring in four of the five previous films with variable screen time—playing a protagonist in the initial trilogy and appearing briefly in the 2017 release, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. He was absent from the 2011 film, On Stranger Tides.

Uncertain Future for the Pirates Franchise and Its Spin-Offs

The ongoing ambiguity surrounding the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, highlighted by mixed signals from producers and talent alike, underscores the complex status of the series’ expansion plans. Margot Robbie’s involvement appears intact according to Bruckheimer, yet her past statements and the need for script revisions reveal the challenges Disney faces in defining the next chapter.

As attempts to solidify the storyline continue, fans of the franchise and its notable actors including Keira Knightley and Johnny Depp remain uncertain about when or how the next installment will come to fruition. Meanwhile, developments related to the Pirates franchise are being watched closely amid broader shifts in Disney’s movie slate.
