Alita: Battle Angel, directed by Robert Rodriguez and produced by James Cameron, gained commercial success when it premiered in 2019. Rosa Salazar, who plays the title character, suggested a sequel may still be on the horizon, expressing hopes during an interview with Collider.
Salazar shared her enthusiasm for continuing the story, saying,
I’m like, ‘Keep going, keep going.’ I’m one of those. I’m all the bots online doing that.
She also playfully mentioned that she plans to persuade Cameron to move forward with the project after he completes his work on the upcoming Avatar: Fire and Ash.
Avatar: Fire and Ash is scheduled for a December 19 theatrical release and centers on the ongoing conflict between Jake and Neytiri’s family and the Ash People on Pandora. Meanwhile, Cameron is working on adapting Charles R. Pellegrino’s book Ghosts of Hiroshima, which follows a man surviving the Hiroshima bombing and then traveling to Nagasaki just before it is bombed. This new project will be Cameron’s first non-Avatar film endeavor since Titanic in 1997.
Future Projects for James Cameron
While the James Cameron Alita sequel remains uncertain, Cameron’s focus appears divided between Avatar: Fire and Ash and his adaptation of Ghosts of Hiroshima. Both projects demonstrate his continued interest in ambitious and impactful storytelling, suggesting that any decision on the Alita continuation will be carefully considered in the context of his other work.
