James Gunn Closes Fan Debate Over Batman Versions

James Gunn has clarified ongoing confusion about the coexistence of two different Batman portrayals within DC’s expanding cinematic universe. While Robert Pattinson‘s Batman appears in a separate narrative called Elseworlds, Gunn confirmed that the DC Universe (DCU) will introduce its own Batman and will not merge the two versions, addressing a debate that has persisted since the announcement of the new DCU slate.

James Gunn Addresses Fan Discussions on Batman’s Multiple Versions

Since the DCU plans reveal, fans have debated whether Robert Pattinson’s Batman should be integrated into the broader DCU or remain standalone after his next film, The Batman – Part II. Some fans, known as “mergers,” want a combined universe where Pattinson’s Batman shares screen time with other DCU characters. Gunn weighed in on these discussions directly on Threads, responding to fans concerned about the split between the two Batman portrayals. He emphasized that he is not bothered by fans expressing their preferences on either side of this split.

“I have no problem with people expressing what they want on both side of this very (not) important issue and don’t understand the anger people are showing to each other about it.”

Distinct Paths for Batman: Reeves’ Vision vs. DCU’s Approach

Currently, there are no plans to incorporate Matt Reeves’ Batman films into the DCU, with Reeves pursuing his own distinct take on the character. Gunn has made clear that he does not intend to interfere with Reeves’ storyline, although a future crossover could happen if Reeves himself chooses to align with the DCU continuity. Any such integration would be a creative decision rather than a corporate mandate, emphasizing storytelling integrity over fan demands.

The Batman’s mythology as envisioned by Reeves contrasts notably with the DCU’s version. For example, elements introduced in the animated series Creature Commandos—including a Gotham infused with superpowered beings like Doctor Phosphorus and Clayface—differ from Reeves’ grittier interpretation. The animated show implies Batman has been active for at least a decade, matching Gunn’s plans for the DCU’s Batman film, The Brave and the Bold, which focuses on Bruce Wayne mentoring his son, Damian Wayne, also known as Robin.

However, the DCU has shown flexibility in adjusting backstory elements—such as in the follow-up season of Peacemaker—which could allow for smoother narrative alignments if needed. Still, the timeline and creative choices for both Batman versions remain in flux.

Upcoming Releases and the Future of Batman in the DC Universe

The Batman – Part II directed by Matt Reeves is scheduled for release in October 2027, whereas The Brave and the Bold is not expected before 2028 at the earliest. Between these, the DCU plans to expand its depiction of Gotham City, including a standalone Clayface movie slated for 2026. This film could provide clues about the direction of the DCU Batman and may even feature cameos that hint at future developments.

Given these staggered release dates and the distinct storytelling paths, uncertainty remains whether Robert Pattinson’s Batman might eventually bridge the divide between Elseworlds and the DCU or maintain separation indefinitely.

Key Players Behind The Batman Franchise

Robert Pattinson stars as Bruce Wayne/The Batman, leading the Elseworlds storyline. Supporting roles include Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle, Jeffrey Wright as Lt. James Gordon, and Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot, also known as The Penguin. These principal cast members form the core of Reeves’ vision of Gotham’s underworld and its complex characters, reinforcing the separate identity from the DCU’s ongoing narrative expansion.
