MCU Star Matthew Lillard Hints at James Gunn’s DCU Role

Matthew Lillard, known for his fresh presence in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), is already expressing interest in joining James Gunn‘s reboot of the DC Universe (DCU). As the two comic book giants continue to expand their franchises into 2025 and beyond, Lillard—who recently joined the Daredevil: Born Again cast—has made clear his eagerness to take on a role in the evolving DCU landscape.

The actor discussed his upcoming appearance in Daredevil: Born Again during a panel at Los Angeles Comic-Con, teasing that his character will not be clad in the traditional superhero Lycra. Although details about his role in Marvel’s world remain scarce, Lillard openly invited James Gunn, who directed the live-action Scooby-Doo films featuring Lillard as Shaggy Rogers, to consider him for projects within the DC Universe.

Speaking directly to fans about his ambitions, Lillard said,

“I’m in ‘Daredevil’ next season. I do not wear any Lycra. I know you’re sad. I’ve wanted to be in the superhero world. If anyone is curious, if you run into James Gunn, tell him I’m available. James Gunn wrote ‘Scooby-Doo 1’ and ‘2,’ he’s one of my dear friends. I keep waiting for that invitation. I don’t know if it’s lost in the mail. For me, playing a superhero…I’m not playing a superhero, but to be in that world, the stakes are really high, and I like really high stakes. I’m not really the guy you hire for an office drama. I like really high emotional stuff, so it’s great. Charlie is great, and Vincent is divine, and those guys are both incredible actors, and I’m very proud to be part of the world.”

Matthew Lillard, Actor

Lillard’s role in the MCU marks his first entry into superhero storytelling, but he comes from a background rich with genre work, including appearances in Five Nights at Freddy’s and the Scream franchise. As of now, no confirmed information has surfaced regarding which part he might take on in James Gunn’s DCU should an opportunity arise.

Meanwhile, James Gunn remains actively engaged in crafting the future of the DC Universe, which has steadily introduced new series and films across platforms. Among current projects are Creature Commandos and the return of Superman, with Peacemaker Season 2 continuing its weekly release schedule on HBO Max until October 9.

Potential Roles for Matthew Lillard in the Expanding DC Universe

Although Lillard’s MCU character is still under wraps, speculation about his future in James Gunn’s DCU has been circulating among fans for years. Notably, Gunn revealed via the social media platform Threads in September that he and Lillard had pitched an idea to former Warner Bros. executive Lorenzo DiBonaventura for Lillard to portray Plastic Man in a DCU feature film.

Plastic Man remains a fan-favorite character many hope to see integrated into the DC cinematic world. Despite Lillard’s age making the role less likely, his established friendship with Gunn and shared history on Scooby-Doo projects suggest he could be a compelling candidate for other parts.

In addition to Plastic Man, proposals have been made suggesting Lillard could play a new incarnation of Gotham City’s Commissioner Jim Gordon. This figure was most recently portrayed in live action by J.K. Simmons during the Snyderverse era, and previously by Gary Oldman in the Dark Knight trilogy. Such a role would allow Lillard to utilize his blend of comedic timing and dramatic depth within the darker tones of Batman’s universe.

For the moment, Lillard remains without an official DCU assignment, but given his personal link to James Gunn and the numerous projects currently underway at DC Studios, a future collaboration seems possible.

Current Landscape of James Gunn’s DC Universe Projects

The new DC Universe led by James Gunn and his team is entering a critical phase with multiple series developing simultaneously. Creature Commandos is preparing to unveil new characters, while Superman’s saga progresses and Peacemaker continues to capture audiences weekly. Gunn, who took the helm nearly a year ago, is orchestrating a comprehensive rebuild of the DC brand on both screens.

Lillard’s comments highlight the ongoing crossover potential between talent working in Marvel and DC franchises, especially given Gunn’s involvement in both domains. His public invitation signals an eagerness to expand his footprint within the superhero genre and aligns with Gunn’s strategy of mapping out a robust DC lineup featuring diverse and dynamic characters.

The Broader Impact of Lillard’s DCU Aspirations

Matthew Lillard’s open wish to join James Gunn’s DC Universe emphasizes the fluid nature of franchise casting in today’s superhero landscape, where actors cross between Marvel and DC projects more frequently. His involvement could bring fresh energy and a different approach to DC’s storytelling, blending his background in horror, comedy, and action.

As the DCU continues to take shape under Gunn’s vision, the integration of talented actors like Lillard could serve to deepen its narrative appeal and broaden its fanbase. Future announcements about casting choices and character reveals will likely benefit from the anticipation sparked by Lillard’s remarks.

With Peacemaker Season 2 concluding in October and other key titles in production, the next phase of James Gunn’s DC Universe is poised for growth, potentially welcoming new faces who share Gunn’s passion for challenging and emotionally charged stories.
