John Lithgow has revealed his remarkable transformation as Albus Dumbledore while filming HBO’s highly anticipated Harry Potter series in England on October 7. The acclaimed actor’s portrayal of the iconic Hogwarts headmaster marks a significant moment in the reboot that aims to bring J.K. Rowling’s original novels to life in a new way.
With John Lithgow as Dumbledore, viewers will witness a fresh yet familiar interpretation of the beloved wizard, whose appearance pays tribute to the late Richard Harris and Michael Gambon’s portrayals. At 70 years old, Lithgow described his casting as unexpected and emotionally challenging, signaling how deeply the role resonates with him at this stage of his career. He shared with ScreenRant in early 2025 that taking on Dumbledore
“is going to define me for the last chapter of my life.”
Despite the weight of the commitment, Lithgow expressed excitement about embodying such an iconic character, acknowledging the lengthy process ahead. He anticipated being around 87 years old by the series wrap party.
“It’s going to define me for the last chapter of my life, I’m afraid,”
Lithgow said.
But I’m very excited.
“Some wonderful people are turning their attention back to Harry Potter. That’s why it’s been such a hard decision. I’ll be about 87 years old at the wrap party.”
Lithgow also explained that the HBO series intends to adapt all seven of Rowling’s novels, dedicating an entire season to each book. He described Dumbledore metaphorically as “kind of the nuclear weapon,” highlighting the character’s immense influence within the story.
“The overall concept of this entire reboot of Harry Potter is an entire season is devoted to a single novel,”
Lithgow stated during a SmartLess podcast episode, noting that he was at that time midway through the second book for research.
