James Wan Returns to Reinvent Saw Franchise with Blumhouse

Blumhouse has recently acquired the rights to the Saw franchise, bringing James Wan back into the creative fold as part of its future plans. The horror series, originally developed by Twisted Pictures, was purchased by Blumhouse in 2024 following the merger with Wan’s Atomic Monsters. This move places the long-running Jigsaw saga once again under Wan’s influence, who notably directed the original Saw film.

Jason Blum’s Vision for the Franchise’s Future

Jason Blum discussed the acquisition in an interview with Variety, emphasizing the challenge of sustaining a lengthy film series and expressing appreciation for the original producers’ cooperation. He highlighted the importance of involving the original creative team to recapture the franchise’s original essence. In his words,

“It’s really hard to make 10 movies in a franchise — I don’t take that away from the original series’ producers. And I’m grateful to them for allowing us to continue.”

Blum further stated,

“My creative outlook is what I always preach: Get the people who made the magic in the first place more involved. James Wan [the original director] will be hugely involved. That’s how we’re going to reinvent it.”

Uncertain Path Ahead After Saw X

While the latest installment, Saw X, was released in 2023, there are no confirmed plans yet regarding how the franchise will proceed under Blumhouse and Wan’s creative guidance. Fans and industry observers await further announcements about the new direction for the James Wan Saw franchise and what innovations might emerge from this partnership.
