Sam Mendes Casts Ringo Starr’s First Wife in Beatles Saga

Sam Mendes’ ambitious Beatles project, featuring four separate films about each member of the Fab Four, is expanding its cast with fresh key roles. Following the earlier announcements of Paul Mescal, Harris Dickinson, Joseph Quinn, and Barry Keoghan portraying Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr respectively, the latest updates reveal that Mia McKenna-Bruce will take on the role of Maureen Starkey, Ringo Starr’s first wife. This casting announcement complements Saoirse Ronan’s previously confirmed role as Linda McCartney, Paul’s wife.

Mia McKenna-Bruce’s Role and Career Highlights

Mia McKenna-Bruce, known for performances in Last Train to Christmas, Persuasion, and The Witcher, is a BAFTA Rising Star award recipient. Her upcoming projects include starring alongside Natalie Dormer in the drama series The Lady and leading in the 1920s crime drama The Seven Dials Mystery. Playing Maureen Starkey is expected to place McKenna-Bruce closely with Barry Keoghan, who portrays Starr, especially in the film centered on the drummer’s life.

Background of Maureen Starkey and Her Connection to the Beatles

Maureen Starkey’s story is closely linked to the Beatles’ early days in Liverpool. Leaving convent school at 14, she became a hairdresser and frequently visited the Cavern Club—a legendary venue tightly connected to the band’s rise. It was there she met Richard Starkey, better known as Ringo Starr. The couple married in 1965 and had three children before their separation in 1975. Starkey later married Isaac Tigrett in 1989 and had a daughter, but sadly passed away in 1994 due to leukemia. Paul McCartney honored her memory with the song Little Willow.

Significance of the Cavern Club and Future Project Direction

The Cavern Club’s importance as the birthplace of the Beatles’ fame suggests the films will highlight their performances there, including the meeting between Starkey and Starr. While Maureen Starkey’s presence may be concentrated primarily in the film about Ringo Starr, this role marks an important opportunity for McKenna-Bruce. The recent casting news of both Ronan and McKenna-Bruce sparks anticipation over who will portray other significant partners in the band members’ lives as the project progresses.
