Scarlett Johansson May Star as Mother Gothel in Tangled Remake

Disney’s live-action remake of Tangled is back in development after a pause caused by the underperformance of its Snow White adaptation. Scarlett Johansson is reportedly being considered for the role of Mother Gothel in the upcoming project, marking a significant casting possibility. This development underscores Disney’s renewed commitment to bringing the story of Rapunzel to a new audience.

Reasons Behind the Project’s Temporary Halt and Revival

The Tangled remake faced a delay when Snow White failed to meet box office expectations, leading Disney to rethink its strategy. However, according to reports, the differing audience appeal between Disney’s classic animated films and its newer releases has played a major role in reviving the project. One source explained,

“there’s a big difference in regards to the audience appeal for old Disney animated pics receiving the live action take, versus those titles post the 1989 Little Mermaid musical renaissance.”

This distinction is evident in Disney’s recent box office results. While Snow White faltered, live-action remakes from the studio’s Renaissance era, including Aladdin, The Lion King, and Beauty and the Beast, achieved remarkable commercial success. Even the Lilo & Stitch remake joined the billion-dollar club this year, affirming the demand for refreshed versions of more recent Disney favorites.

Details About the Tangled Remake Production and Cast

The new Tangled film will be scripted by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson and is expected to closely follow the storyline of the 2010 animated original. That story centers on Rapunzel, the lost princess trapped in a tower by Mother Gothel, who exploits the magic in Rapunzel’s hair to maintain her youth. The original film featured Mandy Moore as Rapunzel and Zachary Levi as Flynn Rider.

Though casting for Rapunzel and Flynn Rider has yet to be announced, Johansson’s rumored role as Mother Gothel could significantly elevate the remake. Having previously worked with Disney as Natasha Romanoff in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Johansson’s established relationship with the studio and considerable star power may boost the project’s profile and audience interest.

Why Disney Is Focusing on Tangled Again

The original Tangled was a notable success for Disney, earning nearly $600 million worldwide and winning a Grammy for its song “I See the Light.” Since its release, it has grown in popularity, inspiring theme park attractions, merchandise, and a dedicated fan base eager to explore Rapunzel’s story further.

With its blend of memorable music, adventure, and heartfelt moments, Tangled remains a prime candidate for a live-action remake. Disney’s pursuit of this project highlights their aim to introduce the story to a new generation, who will likely embrace this updated version as enthusiastically as previous audiences.
