Andrew Garfield has made it clear that he will not appear in the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) installment, Avengers: Doomsday. Despite the film’s star-studded cast, including Robert Downey Jr., Garfield firmly ruled out joining the project during a recent Q&A for GQ.
Garfield, known for his role as Spider-Man/Peter Parker in Sony Pictures’ 2012 and 2014 The Amazing Spider-Man films, responded bluntly when asked if he might be part of the film. He stated, “No, unequivocally f–king no,” to the camera.
Context Behind the Speculation of Garfield’s Return
The question about Garfield’s participation is understandable given that he reprised his Spider-Man role in the 2021 MCU film Spider-Man: No Way Home, which introduced the concept of a multiverse. Fans speculated that the multiverse theme might continue in Avengers: Doomsday, especially since Robert Downey Jr. is set to appear as the villain Doctor Doom, despite his character Iron Man/Tony Stark’s death in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame.
The MCU is expected to address Downey Jr.’s unexpected return since it appears he is not portraying an alternate version of Tony Stark.
Expansion of the Cast with X-Men and Other MCU Stars
Further fueling multiverse theories, several actors who previously appeared in the X-Men film series under 20th Century Fox are confirmed to be part of Avengers: Doomsday. This list includes Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, Kelsey Grammer, and James Marsden, all of whom starred in various X-Men movies from the 2000s.
The recent MCU film Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) already featured many characters from the Fox-produced X-Men universe, setting the stage for possible further crossovers in the new Avengers film.
Details on the Star-Studded Cast and Release Date
The full confirmed cast of Avengers: Doomsday includes Chris Hemsworth, Vanessa Kirby, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Letitia Wright, Paul Rudd, Wyatt Russell, Tenoch Huerta Mejía, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Simu Liu, Florence Pugh, Lewis Pullman, Danny Ramirez, Joseph Quinn, David Harbour, Winston Duke, Hannah John-Kamen, Tom Hiddleston, Channing Tatum, and Pedro Pascal.
The film is scheduled for release in theaters on December 18, 2026.
