Channing Tatum has dampened hopes for a third installment of the 21 Jump Street franchise, citing financial and production challenges as the main reasons the project remains stalled. The 45-year-old actor revealed these details during an interview with Variety while promoting his new movie, Roofman, explaining why the highly anticipated sequel is unlikely to move forward.
Script Praised, But Financial Issues Stall Progress
Tatum mentioned that a script for the third 21 Jump Street movie does exist and praised it highly. He described it as
“sincerely the best script I’ve ever read for me and Jonah [Hill],”
highlighting enthusiasm from the core cast. Despite this, the film’s development has been repeatedly halted due to budget concerns and the complications of managing numerous producers.
He emphasized the complexity by saying,
“I get asked more about Jump Street 3 than any other movie on the face of the planet that I’ve ever done,”
and added,
“I don’t think it’ll ever happen. The problem is the overhead. It would cost as much as the actual budget of the film — if not more — because of all the producers involved. It’s just too top-heavy. It falls over every time.”
Producer Fees Prove to Be a Significant Barrier
While Tatum, Jonah Hill, and directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller have agreed to reduce their producer fees, a major obstacle remains in place with producer Neal H. Moritz. Tatum pointed out that Moritz’s compensation demands are a key factor in the stagnation of the project.
“Neal’s price for a producer fee is huge,”
Tatum explained.
“And to be honest, that’s what’s killing it.”
Neal H. Moritz is known for producing a variety of well-known franchises, including Fast & Furious, Sonic the Hedgehog, and others, which may contribute to his higher fees.
Past Success and Ongoing Interest from the Leading Actors
21 Jump Street was originally released in 2012, followed by its sequel 22 Jump Street in 2014, both receiving positive responses. Despite the current hurdles, Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill have expressed their interest in continuing the series, albeit facing significant challenges that remain unresolved.
