Dwayne Johnson may be preparing to reprise his iconic role as the Scorpion King, the character that marked his film debut in 2001’s The Mummy Returns. This role helped launch Johnson’s career as a film star, and he later starred in the 2002 spin-off, The Scorpion King. Recent reports suggest he could be returning to this role once again.
Insider Reports Indicate Negotiations Are Underway
An insider source named My Time To Shine Hello (MTTSH) shared on the social media platform X that
“The Rock is in talks to return as the Scorpion King.”
Despite this claim, Johnson himself has not confirmed any such plans. Meanwhile, a new Mummy reboot directed by Lee Cronin is scheduled for release on April 17, 2026, but it remains unclear whether Johnson will be involved in this project or any associated installments.
Previous Plans for a Scorpion King Reboot
Back in December 2020, Deadline reported that Johnson and Dany Garcia of Seven Bucks Productions were collaborating to reboot The Scorpion King movie, with Jonathan Herman attached to write the script. At that time, Johnson reflected on the role as his
“very first role ever on the silver screen.”
He expressed feeling “honored and excited” about bringing the Scorpion King back for a new generation, emphasizing how lucky he was to land the part that jumpstarted his career.
Johnson also praised scriptwriter Jonathan Herman, stating he believed Herman
“will put in the hard work to deliver a fantastic script.”
Current Status and Future Prospects Remain Uncertain
Since those initial announcements, there has been no new information from Johnson regarding the reboot. Meanwhile, Johnson’s latest film, The Smashing Machine, has recently been released in theaters, keeping his focus on other projects for the moment. Fans eager to see him return as the Scorpion King must await further updates on whether negotiations will lead to a new portrayal of this cult-favorite character.
