Viola Davis’ portrayal of Amanda Waller has bridged both the DCEU and the emerging DCU, and James Gunn recently shared insights on the character’s trajectory. Gunn, the DC Studios co-CEO, confirmed in a recent interview that he hopes Davis will reprise her role as the tough government official in future DCU projects, emphasizing his strong working relationship with the actress.
During a conversation with Deadline, Gunn expressed enthusiasm for Davis’ return, stating his admiration for her talent.
“Viola and I have a great relationship. I love her to death. I think she’s one of the greatest actors I’ve ever worked with, and so I would certainly hope so,”
Gunn remarked.
Progress and Delays on Amanda Waller-Focused Series
There have been longstanding plans for a series centered on Amanda Waller within the DCU. However, updates on its progress remain scarce, as other projects have taken priority. Speaking at the Peacemaker Season 2 red carpet event, Gunn acknowledged work on the Amanda Waller series has started but admitted that development has been slower compared to other initiatives.
He said,
“We’re working on it, but you know some things have moved really fastly and some things not so fast – and that’s been a thing that hasn’t moved so fast. But I can’t wait to see Viola get her Waller outfits on, with her s—– floral dresses and do something special,”
revealing his excitement to see Davis fully embody the character again.
Viola Davis’ Continued Portrayal of Amanda Waller Across DC Projects
Viola Davis first took on the role of Amanda Waller in the 2016 film Suicide Squad. She reprised the character in the 2021 sequel, The Suicide Squad, and also lent her voice to the animated Amanda Waller in 2024’s Creature Commandos. Additionally, Davis made two uncredited appearances as Waller in 2022’s Black Adam and the Peacemaker television series, maintaining the character’s consistent presence across multiple DC properties.
Though Gunn’s interview with Deadline has since been removed from the original media outlet’s website, the conversation remains accessible through syndicated platforms like Yahoo News, allowing fans to stay informed about the future plans involving Amanda Waller and Viola Davis.
