James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, disclosed details about the newly introduced Checkmate organization at the conclusion of Peacemaker Season 2. This revelation connects the 11th Street Kids, led by John Cena’s Christopher Smith, to a significant new role within the DC Universe, reshaping their direction following Amanda Waller’s fall from power.
Peacemaker’s second season opened with the 11th Street Kids unsure of their path after their triumph over the Butterflies in Season 1, complicated further by Waller’s demotion. In the eighth episode of Season 2, the group decided to invest Vigilante’s hidden funds into founding Checkmate, a fresh initiative that James Gunn hinted will have substantial influence on the DCU’s narrative, aligning with its established comic book origins.
Understanding the Checkmate Formation in Peacemaker Season 2 Finale
During the “Peace By Peace: Part Three” featurette on HBO Max, James Gunn provided insight into the Checkmate reveal that wrapped up Peacemaker Season 2. He explained that the 11th Street Kids essentially transform into Checkmate, along with a few new additions. Gunn described this evolution as a joyous moment, highlighting the group using Vigilante’s financial resources to begin this new chapter:
“We go to the happiest montage I’ve ever shot in my entire life, which is the gang taking all of Vigilante’s money and putting it into some new endeavor as Foxy Shazam is on the party boat today, now. And we see them forming Checkmate. Now, anybody who’s read the comics knows that Checkmate is an entity in the comics. That’s where Sasha Bordeaux is most famously a member of. And now we know in the DCU, the 11th Street Kids are Checkmate, basically, only with a couple of extra members now, of people who we’ve seen change.”

According to Gunn, the additional team members joining the 11th Street Kids include Sasha Bordeaux, Langston Fleury, Judomaster, and a character played by Tim Meadows. This aligns with the comics, where Bordeaux is a recognized figure within Checkmate. Judomaster’s inclusion stems from bonding with Adebayo on Earth Two, expanding the group’s diversity.

“And that’s Sasha Bordeaux, Langston Fleury, Tim Meadows’ character, and Judomaster, who’s joined them after bonding with Adebayo on Earth Two. And we see Checkmate making the world better, and we look up, and we see Eagly, who last we saw hiding in a corner, flying happily around the sky.”

The Mission and Future Impact of Checkmate in the DC Universe
Gunn emphasized that Checkmate’s primary mission is focused on improving the world. This goal signifies a purposeful and hopeful direction for the former 11th Street Kids, suggesting their evolution into a force advocating for positive change within the DCU. The presence of Eagly, who had previously appeared timid and withdrawn, now flying freely, symbolizes this transformation and newfound sense of optimism.
Checkmate’s introduction in Peacemaker not only ties back to the rich lore of DC Comics but also establishes a new layer of complexity and potential for future storylines. Its mix of familiar and fresh characters, combined with the stakes involved, signals that this organization will be a key player in upcoming DC Studios projects, reshaping alliances and threats within the universe.
