At an event in Los Angeles, actress Reese Witherspoon delivered a heartfelt tribute to Diane Keaton, recognizing the profound impact Keaton had on her early career. Witherspoon reflected on their connection as she mourned Keaton’s passing on October 11, emphasizing the significance of their shared history in the entertainment industry.
During Hello Sunshine’s Shine Away event, Witherspoon spoke openly about how Keaton served as one of her first mentors when she was just 15 years old and beginning her journey in acting. The two had previously worked together in the 1991 film Wildflower, a formative experience for Witherspoon that left a lasting impression.
Memories from Their Early Collaboration
Witherspoon recounted a memorable moment from an early audition where her strong country accent stood out. Keaton’s curiosity was both warm and validating.
I just wanted to talk to you for one second because — and I’m gonna try and get through this without tearing up — but I don’t know if you guys heard that Diane Keaton passed today,
Witherspoon shared during her speech.
She went on to recall,
I had to take a second to just really think about it because when I was 15-years-old, Diane was really important to me. She was one of my first mentors in this business. I was 15 years old and I was from Nashville, Tennessee, and I didn’t know anybody.

Witherspoon described their interaction in detail, saying,
And she she goes, ‘Who are you?’
followed by her response,
I said, ‘I’m Reese Witherspoon, I’m from Nashville, Tennessee.’ And she said, ‘Are you making that [accent] up?’ And I said, ‘No, ma’am, I’m from Nashville, Tennessee, and I’m here and I’d love to be in your movie.’ And she was like, ‘Well you’re hired. You’re hired today, tomorrow, and the next day. I don’t know who you are, but I am so excited to have you,
Witherspoon reflected.
The summer spent on set with Keaton, who also directed the film, proved invaluable for the young actress. Witherspoon highlighted how Keaton encouraged professionalism and personal growth.
That was one of the most important summers of my childhood because she really took the time to pull me aside and say: ‘Stand up straight, okay? I want you to have good posture. If you’re going to be an actress, you’ve got to work on your posture, okay?’
Witherspoon Describes Keaton’s Unmatched Originality
Witherspoon praised Keaton as a unique and irreplaceable talent. She commended the way Keaton’s diverse roles—from Annie Hall to The Godfather and Something’s Gotta Give—highlight her remarkable versatility and lasting presence in film history.
But the thing that I just loved about her is she was such an original. And if you just close your mind and think of Diane Keaton … I guarantee you, from ‘Annie Hall’ to ‘The Godfather,’ to ‘Something’s Gotta Give,’ she is just incredible and indelible and just a truly original person,
Witherspoon observed.
The actress encouraged living boldly and expressing individuality in memory of Keaton’s unique spirit:
So for Diane, watch one of her movies and wear like a really cool, interesting outfit, black and white, take a cool picture, and just live your dream. Just be your unique, interesting self. I think Diane would be really happy. So rest in peace Diane.
Reflecting on Keaton’s Guidance and Vision
At the 2017 American Film Institute’s AFI Life Achievement Award ceremony honoring Diane Keaton, Witherspoon shared insights about Keaton’s directing style and impact on her career. She described Keaton as exceptionally clear and gifted, especially behind the camera.
She directed me in my second film ever … I was such a novice,
Witherspoon recalled humbly.
She elaborated on Keaton’s directorial brilliance by saying,
Because she has what in this business we call ‘the eye.’ And that is the genius of Diane.
Witherspoon credited Keaton for teaching her the importance of authenticity, affirming:
You are the only you there is, and she taught me to always be an original, just like her. And for that, Diane, I cannot thank you enough.
