007 First Light Adopts Daniel Craig’s Iconic Combat Style

IO Interactive, known for the Hitman series, is creating a unique James Bond experience with their upcoming game 007 First Light, set for release in 2025. The game embraces elements of the Daniel Craig era combat style, aiming to deliver a fresh yet familiar action experience that reflects the more physical and dynamic nature of recent Bond films.

Physical Combat Inspired by Daniel Craig Films

Creative director Hakan Abrak revealed in an interview with Edge Magazine that the combat feels especially influenced by the physicality seen in Daniel Craig’s portrayal of Bond. This includes fluid transitions between shooting and close-quarters fighting, as well as cover mechanics and immersive screen effects. Abrak explained,

“the physicality of the combat is more like the Daniel Craig era,”

underscoring their goal to modernize the action within the game’s third-person perspective.

Gameplay Dynamics Emphasize Movement and Acrobatic Action

Though borrowing from the Craig era, Abrak clarified that 007 First Light is not an exact replica of past Bond games or films. Instead, the team strives for originality, focusing on constant motion and agility. He noted,

“we’re trying to make it feel original – but it was important to be always moving, dynamic and acrobatic, almost like the parkour at the start of Casino Royale.”

These gameplay choices highlight an emphasis on fast-paced, skillful combat rather than static gunplay.

Design Challenges and New Approaches to Bond’s Arsenal

Unlike the Hitman series, where ranged combat often serves as a last resort, IO Interactive set out to create

“the best weapon-handling we have done to date”

for 007 First Light, according to the project director. The developers have combined their expertise with the Bond license to craft a character who feels grounded but still capable of intense, versatile combat. The team also ensured this Bond is not a superhero from the outset, aiming for a realistic progression rather than an immediately invincible hero.

Bond’s Identity and Creative Freedom

The developers consider this project a homecoming, given that James Bond has inspired their work for years. Rather than following an existing script or portrayal, IO Interactive was granted freedom to invent their own interpretation of Bond for this origin story. This approach allows them to balance innovation with respect for the iconic figure, promising a new but recognizable experience for fans.

Significance of Embracing the Daniel Craig Style

By focusing on Daniel Craig era combat, 007 First Light aims to modernize Bond gameplay with a more visceral and kinetic feel. This adaptation may set a new standard for action within the Bond gaming franchise, blending established cinematic influences with original design. As anticipation builds for the 2025 release, fans can expect a dynamic and immersive interpretation of Bond’s early years, showcasing versatile combat and refreshed storytelling.
