DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has revealed that the upcoming Supergirl film shares similarities with his Marvel debut, Guardians of the Galaxy. Gunn highlighted that both projects are connected by their adventurous space settings, emphasizing the scope of the expanding DC Universe (DCU) as he prepares to release Supergirl in 2026.
Expanding the DC Universe with Interconnected Stories
Gunn explained that several storylines from different projects are interwoven to create a broader narrative fabric. Referring specifically to the Peacemaker season 2 finale, which featured the character Chris stranded in an alternate universe and Rick Flag Sr. opposing metahumans, Gunn said,
“Both those things are worked in. We knew both of those stories were a part of what we originally put together, so they’re part of the overall tapestry, but they’re also their own thing,”
according to his interview with Rolling Stone.
He further described Supergirl as a space adventure akin to Guardians of the Galaxy, stating,
“Supergirl especially is a space adventure,”
and added,
“It’s like Guardians. Lanterns is its own thing. There’s just a longer, sort of a bigger world we’re building with all these different pieces and they do all come together and intersect sometimes in a story fashion and sometimes just in a, you know, ‘Here’s another piece of the world’ fashion.”
Upcoming Releases in the DCU Slate
Supergirl is scheduled to premiere on June 26, 2026, alongside the Green Lantern TV series titled Lanterns. Following these, the next major feature will be Man of Tomorrow, which serves as a kind of sequel to Superman and focuses on Superman teaming up with his rival, Lex Luthor, to face a larger threat, presumably Brainiac.
Peacemaker’s Future and Fan Reactions
Regarding Peacemaker, Gunn suggested that a third season is unlikely. Addressing mixed fan reactions to the season 2 finale, some of whom were disappointed by the absence of major cameos or big revelations, Gunn shared on Threads,
I love the episode but I understand not everyone does, which is completely fair.
Looking Ahead in the DC Universe
With several projects in the pipeline and a complex universe taking shape, Gunn’s vision blends individual stories like Supergirl and Lanterns into an interconnected tapestry that will continue to evolve. This approach sets the stage for a rich and varied experience for fans as the DCU progresses.
