Keanu Reeves’ Good Fortune Role Draws on Classic Characters

Keanu Reeves taps into his earlier film portrayals to shape his role in the upcoming movie Good Fortune, set for release on October 17. Writer and director Aziz Ansari aimed to evoke Reeves’ performances from before his action star fame, creating a fresh take on the guardian angel Gabriel that blends innocence with subtle humor.

In a recent interview with GQ, Reeves, Ansari, and Seth Rogen explored their careers and the making of Good Fortune. Ansari explained that he sought to channel Reeves’ characters from films like Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure and Parenthood for Gabriel’s persona. These roles gave Reeves a spacey but endearing charm that Ansari wanted to bring forward in the film’s angelic figure.

Inspiration Behind the Guardian Angel Persona

Most fans recognize Reeves as Ted from Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, a quirky high school student with lovable awkwardness. In Parenthood, directed by Ron Howard in 1989, Reeves played Tod Higgins, a similarly naïve and gentle character navigating family challenges. Ansari picked these early roles as the foundation for Gabriel, describing him as a “budget” guardian angel who strives to do more than his assigned duties by getting deeply involved in the lives of Arj, played by Ansari himself, and Jeff, portrayed by Seth Rogen.

Ansari remarked,

“There’s such a sweetness to these guys and all the humor of their naivete,”

highlighting the blend of innocence and comedic warmth that defines these characters. Reeves added that embracing these influences helped him inject not only innocence but also

“the energy of that… the kind of moving forward.”

Positive Reception and Supporting Cast Details

Joining Reeves in Good Fortune are Keke Palmer, Sandra Oh, and Sherry Cola, contributing to a strong ensemble that supports Ansari’s directorial debut. The film has received favorable reviews so far, holding an 83% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. ScreenRant praised Reeves’ portrayal of Gabriel, calling it

“the most endearing character of the year.”

This year, Reeves has appeared in two films, including Ballerina, reprising his iconic role as John Wick alongside Ana de Armas. With further updates hinting that John Wick 5 is in development, Reeves continues to balance his legacy action roles with new and varied projects like Good Fortune.
