James Gunn has confirmed that the upcoming Supergirl film will unfold in outer space, offering a different setting compared to previous Superman-related stories, including the 1984 movie. This fresh approach sets Supergirl apart by venturing into the cosmos, with Gunn hinting that the tone may capture some of the adventurous spirit found in Guardians of the Galaxy.
Supergirl’s Cosmic Journey and Shared Universe Connections
In an interview with Rolling Stone, James Gunn described Supergirl’s story as distinctly a space adventure and noted,
“Supergirl especially is a space adventure, It’s like Guardians.”
He clarified that while each film and series retains its own identity, they also connect to a larger, evolving shared universe. This is evident in how other projects, such as the upcoming Lanterns series, are integrated within the bigger narrative.
Gunn elaborated,
“Lanterns is its own thing. There’s just a longer, sort of a bigger world we’re building with all these different pieces, and they do all come together and intersect sometimes in a story fashion and sometimes just in a, you know, ‘Here’s another piece of the world’ fashion.”
This reflects a deliberate strategy to create a fluid and interconnected storyline across multiple titles.
Integration of Peacemaker and Expanded Story Threads
James Gunn also highlighted how the second season of Peacemaker links to this overarching universe. He explained,
“Both those things are worked in. We knew both of those stories were a part of what we originally put together, so they’re part of the overall tapestry, but they’re also their own thing.”
The show’s ending left John Cena’s character, Chris Smith, stranded in a mysterious dimension called Salvation, designated as a prison for criminal metahumans by Rick Flag, Sr. and ARGUS. Smith’s predicament plays into larger plot developments.
Potential Impact on Supergirl and the Superman Saga
While the full payoff from Peacemaker’s cliffhanger might come later in the Man of Tomorrow film, it holds potential relevance for Supergirl’s narrative. If Gunn aims to replicate the unique blend of space adventure and interdimensional elements that defined Guardians of the Galaxy, weaving these aspects into Supergirl could help advance the Superman saga. This would create a new chapter within the existing mythos, expanding its cosmic scope.
However, the project faces uncertainty, as Superman-related films have recently encountered profitability concerns, and Peacemaker’s reception has not generated significant momentum. Despite these challenges, Supergirl is set to launch next June, starring Milly Alcock as Kara and Jason Momoa portraying Lobo, marking an ambitious step forward into the stars.
