Channing Tatum reprises his role as Gambit in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, marking the mutant’s return to the big screen alongside original X-Men characters. Although Tatum was attached to the role over ten years ago, he only got to portray Remy LeBeau recently in the film Deadpool & Wolverine.
In this latest installment, Gambit is set to take on a more serious tone as he teams up with Professor X, Magneto, Cyclops, Beast, Nightcrawler, and Mystique to confront the Avengers and Fantastic Four.
The Challenge of Adjusting Gambit’s Cajun Accent
A significant change in Tatum’s portrayal involves moderating Gambit’s distinctive Cajun accent. The actor explained how finding the right balance was crucial to the role’s success.
“When you go down to Lafayette, where most of the Cajuns are and Cajun culture, there’s a huge spectrum of Cajun. It’s massive.”
Tatum expanded on this complexity by highlighting the need to match the accent with the scene’s purpose and tone.
“And so I have to interpret what I need to get across in the scene,”
“And I got to make sure that, ‘Is this line for a joke, and can I really Cajun this one up? Or is this line for plot, and do I need to be really clear but still in a Cajun accent?'”
Balancing Comedy with Drama Under the Russo Brothers’ Direction
The negotiation around Gambit’s accent reflects the broader tone of Avengers: Doomsday. Tatum noted that while directors Joe and Anthony Russo enjoy incorporating humor, the film will primarily be dramatic in nature.
“It’s always a bit of a push and pull,”
“love their comedy and that’s always going to be in there as well.”
“it’s definitely going to be a dramatic movie.”
Expectations for an Epic Cinematic Experience
Tatum expressed admiration for the scale of Avengers: Doomsday, emphasizing how every Marvel movie aims to surpass the last. The ambitious nature of the project has set a high standard for the film’s impact.

“I think that they really set themselves up for a really hard bar to hit. Every single movie that they make is the next one has to top it.”
He also conveyed his astonishment at the screenplay’s complexity and the excitement surrounding how the movie will unfold on screen.
“When I read the script, I was just like, ‘What?!’ I don’t think anybody’s really going to understand how they did this,”
“It’s going to melt everybody’s brain all over again.”
Future Prospects and the Role of Gambit in the Storyline
Marvel Studios is expected to add heavy-hitters such as Jean Grey, Storm, and Wolverine to the X-Men roster featured in Avengers: Doomsday. However, the studio has either kept casting under wraps or plans to include those characters during reshoots.
Tatum’s commitment to portraying Gambit authentically—right down to his hair, costume, and accent—remains steadfast. As the film shifts from comedy to a more serious tone, fans will watch closely to see how the character fits into the mounting tension, especially with the looming threat of Doom.
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled for release on December 18, 2026, followed by Avengers: Secret Wars arriving on December 17, 2027.
