Michael J. Fox Reveals Latest Backstage ‘Back to the Future’ Drama

Michael J. Fox has shared new insights into the behind-the-scenes experiences during the making of the Back to the Future films, revealing on-set tensions and personal moments from decades ago. His memoir sheds light on challenging interactions with fellow actors and his later communications with Eric Stoltz, the original Marty McFly.

Challenges with Crispin Glover’s Unique Acting Style

Fox’s memoir describes the occasional friction he faced while working with Crispin Glover, who portrayed George McFly, due to Glover’s distinctive approach to his role. This creative tension led to unusual solutions on set to manage filming.

“Nobody puts Crispin in a box. But that didn’t prevent the camera crew from literally building a box around him,”

Fox recounted.

Glover’s commitment to his interpretation meant he often moved unpredictably during scenes. One notable instance involved Glover diverging from the planned position between a clothesline and Fox’s character, which required the crew to intervene physically.

“As Crispin approached the camera, he was meant to stay in a lane between the clothesline and me. But Crispin had a different plan,”

Fox shared.

To keep Glover’s performance within the camera’s frame, the production team set up physical restrictions.

“The boundaries were defined by sandbags and C-stands, trapping Crispin into adhering to the parameters of the shot,”

Fox explained.

Despite these difficulties, Fox maintained a strong respect for Glover’s artistry.

“His talent was unquestionable, although his methods sometimes created friction,”

Fox wrote.

Still, I respected how he remained true to George (as he understood and embodied him).

This complex dynamic contributed to the film’s success, which ultimately grossed over $380 million worldwide and earned an Academy Award, securing its status as a beloved classic of the 1980s.

Michael J. Fox Connects with Eric Stoltz After Four Decades

Fox also recounts a personal chapter linked to Eric Stoltz, originally cast as Marty McFly before Fox replaced him early in production. In his memoir, Fox reveals reaching out to Stoltz after many years to address their shared history.

“Eric has maintained his silence on the subject for forty years, so I was prepared for the likelihood that he’d prefer to keep it that way,”

Fox noted. He sent Stoltz a letter inviting a meeting, and expressed openness to any response.

“If your answer is ‘piss off and leave me alone’… that works, too.”

Stoltz’s reply showed thoughtful humor and respect, despite declining to be part of the memoir.

“Eric’s beautifully written reply began, ‘Piss off and leave me alone!’ Thankfully, this was followed by ‘I jest…’ Eric was thoughtful about my outreach, and although he respectfully declined to participate in the book, he seemed open to the idea of getting together.”

Fox recalled.

Michael J. Fox’s book Future Boy: Back to the Future and My Journey Through the Space-Time Continuum is now available, offering fans a deeper look at the backstage stories behind the iconic franchise and its enduring legacy.
