Aziz Ansari Hopes to Revive Bill Murray’s Scrapped Film Being Mortal

Aziz Ansari remains hopeful about completing the film Being Mortal, which would have marked his feature directorial debut before it was halted in 2022. The comedy-drama, an adaptation of Atul Gawande’s 2014 book, faced suspension after an internal investigation into allegations against lead actor Bill Murray, who was accused of unwanted physical contact with a female staffer. Ansari expressed his continued desire to see the project finished, emphasizing the dedication of his team to the film’s quality.

Details Surrounding the Film’s Suspension and Cast Involvement

The film Being Mortal was set to star Bill Murray alongside Keke Palmer and Seth Rogen, portraying characters intertwined in a narrative grounded in Gawande’s exploration of medicine and mortality. Searchlight Pictures halted production following an inquiry into allegations that Murray kissed and straddled a young female crew member. The parties reached a settlement, which ultimately contributed to the cancellation of the project.

Ansari, promoting his directorial debut film Good Fortune, told Entertainment Weekly,

At some point, it’d be great to finish it,

and added,

I have some of the stuff edited. There’s so much stuff in it that we’re all really proud of.

Despite the setback, Ansari reflected on the value of the completed footage and the potential for future revival.

Bill Murray’s Response to the Allegations

Earlier this year, Bill Murray addressed the incident during an interview with The New York Times, describing his actions as a joke carried out under unusual circumstances. He said,

It was Covid, we were all wearing masks and we were all stranded in this one room listening to this crazy scene,

and admitted,

I dunno what prompted me to do it. It’s something that I had done to someone else before, and I thought it was funny, and every time it happened, it was funny.

He explained that his gesture involved kissing through masks, clarifying,

I was wearing a mask, and I gave her a kiss, and she was wearing a mask,

also noting,

It wasn’t like I touched her, but it was just, I gave her a kiss through a mask. And she wasn’t a stranger.

Murray expressed regret over the fallout, calling it “a great disappointment.” He reflected,

Because I thought I knew someone, and I did not,

continuing,

I certainly thought it was light. I thought it was funny. To me, it’s still funny, the idea that you could give someone a kiss with a mask on. It’s still stupid. It’s all it was.

How the Film’s Suspension Led to Ansari’s New Project

The pause in Being Mortal production created space for Ansari to develop Good Fortune, a distinctly different comedy centered around a bumbling but well-intentioned guardian angel named Gabriel, played by Keanu Reeves. In addition to directing, Ansari wrote the screenplay and took on a lead role as Arj, a struggling gig worker navigating economic hardship.

Seth Rogen and Keke Palmer reunite for this new film, with Palmer portraying Elena, a coworker and love interest to Ansari’s character. To authentically portray the challenges faced by gig workers, Ansari consulted with union organizers and gained firsthand experience by working in food delivery. He stated,

The last thing I want is for someone to watch this and roll their eyes at the portrayal of what [Arj is] going through,

underscoring his commitment to genuine representation.

Ansari Reflects on Working with Keanu Reeves and Future Plans

Ansari remains amazed to have secured Keanu Reeves for the leading role, recalling Reeves’s iconic performances. He observed,

He’s so iconic, and I so had his voice in my head just from seeing him in all these movies: Bill and Ted, Parenthood,

and added,

He’s really funny when he is playing these guys that are kind of naive and maybe a little dumb, but always coded in this incredibly sweet innocence and lovability.

Looking ahead, Ansari shared his uncertainty about his next project but affirmed his eagerness to complete Being Mortal. He told Entertainment Weekly,

I’m not sure what I’m gonna do next,

but emphasized,

But I would love to finish that. The project is something that means a lot to all of us, and it definitely comes up. Maybe there’s a world where we’ll finish it at some point.

Along with this unfinished film, he expressed interest in pursuing other projects, including a potential science fiction movie.

Current Releases and Industry Impact

Good Fortune is set to hit theaters this Friday, introducing audiences to its comedic yet timely examination of economic inequality and the housing crisis. The cancellation of Being Mortal and the controversy involving Bill Murray underscores ongoing industry challenges related to workplace conduct and accountability. Ansari’s hope to revive the film highlights the complex intersection of creative ambitions and real-world controversies within Hollywood’s evolving landscape.
