Mark Ruffalo recently addressed the uncertain future of the Hulk within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), clarifying why another solo Hulk movie is unlikely in the near term. While the topic has come up frequently since the character’s last on-screen appearance in 2022, Ruffalo offered insight during a recent GQ interview about the challenges surrounding a standalone film for the character.
Why a Solo Hulk Film Remains Elusive
When asked if he ever wished to star in his own Hulk movie, Ruffalo admitted,
“Yeah, I’d love to have a solo Hulk movie,”
highlighting his personal enthusiasm for the idea despite its difficulties. The actor has portrayed Bruce Banner, aka the Hulk, since joining the Avengers ensemble in 2012. However, unlike his co-stars, he has never headlined a solo film or series, either on the big screen or via Disney Plus.
The reason behind this is tied to the character’s ownership rights. Ruffalo explained,
“I don’t know if you know the story of that, but it’s not really owned by Marvel. It’s a Universal property. I don’t know if it’ll ever really come to be, honestly.”
He further noted,
“We keep talking about it, what it would be. There’s been so many Hulk movies already, it’s like, does anyone really want another one? But I’d love one, and I do think the audiences would be into it if we could crack the nut of it.”
Background on Hulk’s Previous MCU Appearance and Legal Rights
The Hulk’s existing solo film, The Incredible Hulk, released in 2008 starred Edward Norton as Bruce Banner and remains part of the MCU canon, as confirmed by references in recent films like Captain America: Brave New World. Ruffalo replaced Norton for the Marvel ensemble casts starting in 2012, but Universal Pictures’ ownership of distribution rights to the solo Hulk film has impacted Marvel’s ability to fully capitalize on the character independently.

In fact, last year Ruffalo revealed that Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios’ president, told him there would be no new Hulk movie in the MCU. The actor shared,
“As far as I know. I could talk more about it but I’ve been told not to,”
reflecting a more pessimistic stance at that time. His latest remarks, while tempered, show a willingness to keep the door open for future possibilities.
Ruffalo’s Current MCU Involvement and Future Prospects
Mark Ruffalo has earned recognition as Hulk since his debut in The Avengers nearly a decade ago. This year, announcements indicated that he might return as the character in Spider-Man: Brand New Day alongside Tom Holland. However, Ruffalo has admitted some uncertainty about this role, stating,
“I haven’t read a script yet,”
suggesting he remains unsure if the Hulk will appear in the film or what form that would take.
Similarly, Ruffalo’s involvement in Avengers: Doomsday remains unclear, as he was notably absent from the film’s official cast reveal earlier this year. He joked about his exclusion, quipping,
“They decided that it was better to get rid of me than for me to tell the end of the next movie,”
hinting at his reputation for spoiling plot details.
His last appearance as Hulk came in the Disney Plus series She-Hulk in 2022, where the story introduced his son, Skaar. This father-son dynamic is expected to have some future presence in the MCU, although specific plans for them have not yet been disclosed.
What Lies Ahead for Hulk’s Story in the MCU
The future of the Hulk in the MCU remains uncertain due to complex rights issues and Marvel’s current storytelling directions. Despite these hurdles, Mark Ruffalo’s continued interest in a solo Hulk film indicates that, should legal and creative challenges be resolved, audiences may yet see a new chapter for the character. Meanwhile, Hulk fans will likely follow his evolving role in upcoming team-up movies and TV series, hoping for a clearer path forward.
