Mel Gibson‘s upcoming Mel Gibson Resurrection Film, The Resurrection of the Christ, is shaping up to be his costliest directorial project to date. The two-part film is reported to have a combined budget of around $200 million, marking a significant increase from Gibson’s previous works.
Details on Production and Comparisons to Past Films
The Resurrection of the Christ serves as a sequel to 2004’s The Passion of the Christ, which Gibson directed and co-produced. That earlier film portrayed Jesus’s arrest, trial, and crucifixion, with Jim Caviezel in the lead role. Deadline reports that each segment of the new film is budgeted at roughly $100 million, making the overall production twice the cost of the original film. In comparison, Gibson’s earlier movies had notably smaller budgets, including $37 million for The Man Without a Face (1993), up to $72 million for Braveheart (1995), and $30 million for The Passion of the Christ. Other titles like Apocalypto (2006) and Hacksaw Ridge (2016) each had budgets near $40 million.
“Expectations are for the films to pick up after Christ’s crucifixion, which closed the previous iteration,”
Deadline noted.
“Christ’s resurrection came three days later, according to the Bible. Don’t expect a straightforward rendition, however. Gibson has spoken before about his vision for the film being ‘an acid trip’ and ‘super ambitious,’ including the fall of the angels and Christ descending into hell as part of his spiritual journey. Sources close to the project have confirmed to us that it will include battles between angels and demons and forces of ‘good and evil’ in other realms, which probably goes some way to explaining the big budget.”
New Cast and Release Timeline for Resurrection Film
The cast for this Mel Gibson Resurrection Film has undergone changes from the original. Jim Caviezel will not reprise his role as Jesus, who is now portrayed by Jaakko Ohtonen. Monica Bellucci, who previously played Mary Magdalene, is replaced by Mariela Garriga in this role. Additional cast members include Kasia Smutniak as Mary, Pier Luigi Pasino as Peter, Riccardo Scamarcio as Pontius Pilate, and Rupert Everett in a role yet to be announced.
The first installment of the film is scheduled for release on March 26, 2027, with the follow-up set to premiere on May 6, 2027. This ambitious project aims to add a new, complex chapter to Gibson’s portrayal of biblical events, emphasizing spiritual battles and otherworldly conflicts.
