Timothée Chalamet Wanted Julia Roberts Before Choosing Gwyneth Paltrow

In an unexpected turn during casting for the film Marty Supreme, Timothée Chalamet reportedly wanted Julia Roberts to star as his character’s love interest but ended up choosing Gwyneth Paltrow instead. The drama unfolded as Roberts declined the role despite a substantial offer, leading producers to cast Paltrow in the part.

Julia Roberts Declined Role Despite Multi-Million Dollar Offer

A source familiar with the production revealed that Julia Roberts was offered nearly $20 million to co-star opposite Timothée Chalamet, who leads Marty Supreme, a movie depicting the life of ping-pong champion Marty Mauser. However, Roberts turned the role down mainly due to the significant age difference between her and Chalamet, which she doubted audiences would accept in a romantic storyline.

Julia was offered the role. She wanted to work with Timothée, but she turned down the role after reading the script, which she loved,

the source said.

She just didn’t think audiences would buy her playing a romantic interest to someone who’s so much younger.

Despite efforts by producers and Chalamet himself to persuade Roberts, including increasing the financial incentive close to $20 million, she remained firm in her refusal to accept the part.

Producers, including Timothée, tried their best to convince her they would gel on screen,

the insider added.

They kept upping her offer and came close to $20million, but Julia’s answer was still a firm no.

Gwyneth Paltrow Cast as Love Interest After Julia Roberts’ Rejection

Following Roberts’ decision to pass on the role, Gwyneth Paltrow was chosen to portray Kay Stone, the character who shares a passionate relationship with Marty, played by Timothée. This project signals a rare acting return for Paltrow after dedicating recent years to focusing on her wellness brand, Goop.

Implications for Marty Supreme’s Casting and Audience Reception

The casting developments highlight the sensitive challenges around age differences in romantic film roles, especially with well-known actors involved. Timothée Chalamet’s push for Julia Roberts suggests a desire for experienced co-stars, but the ultimate choice of Gwyneth Paltrow may affect how audiences receive the chemistry on screen. The film’s success will likely hinge on how convincingly Paltrow and Chalamet portray their characters’ intense relationship despite these behind-the-scenes casting controversies.
