Director Jon M. Chu Discusses Character Portrayals and Casting Choices
Director Jon M. Chu described Cynthia Erivo’s Elphaba as a superhero figure, aiming to emphasize her strength and individuality. Chu explained,
“We wanted to show how powerful she really was… Elphaba’s her own person and Glinda could be too. It’s also the origin story of Glinda the Good.”
He highlighted the dual focus on these iconic characters’ identities in the film’s narrative.
Regarding casting Colman Domingo as the Cowardly Lion, Chu recounted reaching out to him directly via Instagram, saying,
“It’s not a ton of lines, but maybe you have a little time… He was like, ‘Why the f— not, let’s go!’ And then we went ahead and recorded the lines.”
Plot Developments Continue from the 2024 Wicked Film
Wicked: For Good picks up after the events of the 2024 movie, with Elphaba, branded the Wicked Witch of the West, residing in the Ozian forest and fighting for the rights of the silenced Animals. Meanwhile, Glinda lives under the watchful eye of Madame Morrible in Emerald City, preparing to wed Prince Fiyero while embodying the city’s symbol of goodness.
The story explores renewed tensions as Glinda and Elphaba’s intersecting paths threaten the fragile peace in Oz. It also follows the experiences of Nessarose and Boq, whose lives become entwined with those of Elphaba and Glinda. Additionally, the arrival of a girl from Kansas sets crucial events into motion, connecting the narrative to the well-known Wizard of Oz saga.
Anticipation Builds for the November 2025 Premiere
Wicked: For Good is scheduled to premiere in theaters on November 21, 2025, continuing to expand the universe introduced in the 2024 film. The addition of Colman Domingo as the Cowardly Lion rounds out the iconic lineup, promising a fresh take on familiar characters as the story delves deeper into the mythology of Oz.
