Stephen King Horror Adaptation Loses to Hit Sci-Fi Series

MGM+ is emerging as a notable platform for horror content, much like Apple TV‘s growing reputation for science fiction. Although MGM+ has not yet reached the wide mainstream exposure of larger streaming services, it has made a mark with the sci-fi horror show From. This series has gained significant attention within the horror community and continues to be a standout on MGM+. MGM+ recently released The Institute, a new television adaptation of Stephen King’s novel scripted by Benjamin Cavell. Despite receiving some positive reviews, this Stephen King horror adaptation has not surpassed From in popularity on the platform.

From debuted its first season in 2022 and has remained consistently within MGM+’s Top 10 TV shows. Unlike other titles that fluctuate according to viewer interest, From has never dropped out of this elite ranking. The release of The Institute in July 2025 introduced a contender for the platform’s leading horror series, but From has maintained its top spot. Although The Institute has attracted steady viewership, it lags behind From in both ratings and audience reception. From enjoys a near-perfect critical approval rating of 96%, while The Institute holds a more modest 65% critics’ score.

From has earned favorable comparisons to cult television hits such as Lost, with many critics praising its complex layering of mysteries and clues. The show’s premise revolves around a cursed town that ensnares anyone who enters. The story begins when the Matthews family embarks on a road trip that turns nightmarish after they find themselves trapped in this supernatural town with no escape. Alongside other stranded inhabitants, including Boyd Stevens (played by Harold Perrineau), the residents must uncover the town’s dark secrets before malevolent forces claim them after nightfall. Stephen King himself has expressed admiration for the program, tweeting,

FROM: I’m three episodes in. Wonderful concept, beautifully handled. Is it possible these people are dead and don’t know it? That spike through the head … holy cow.

Release and Production Updates for From

Viewers awaiting new episodes of From have reason to be optimistic, as MGM+ has confirmed the show’s renewal for a fourth season. Production began in June 2025 and is anticipated to finish by November of the same year. Ricky He, who portrays deputy sheriff Kenny Liu, recently mentioned that filming is nearing completion, signaling that the next part of the eerie town’s story will be available soon. Fans can expect the upcoming season to premiere in early 2026. Both From and The Institute remain available for streaming on MGM+.
