At the beginning of 2023, DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran revealed their ambitious Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters slate, aiming to revitalize the DC Universe (DCU). Despite launching several projects, progress has slowed significantly due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, causing delays in both films and television shows. James Gunn’s DCU plans remain partially unclear as some projects have been dropped while others continue to be developed.
Changes in the DCU Slate and Uncertain Directions
Several announced projects like Waller and The Authority seem to have stalled or disappeared from the slate. In contrast, new titles such as Clayface and Man of Tomorrow have been introduced, leaving fans uncertain about the overall roadmap. When speaking with BobaTalks, Gunn acknowledged that his vision for the DCU extends well beyond the upcoming Superman sequel, yet numerous factors could influence whether he remains involved long term.
“Yes, they definitely go significantly further than Man of Tomorrow,”
Gunn said.
“So whether or not that’ll be me that’s able to fulfil that promise depends on a lot of things in life.”
The filmmaker suggested that ongoing box office results and corporate changes at Warner Bros. Discovery could impact the trajectory of the franchise.
Potential Impacts from Corporate Changes and Executive Decisions
The possibility of Warner Bros. Discovery being sold raises concerns about the future stewardship of the DCU. Although a new ownership would not automatically dismiss Gunn due to his efforts to restore the DC brand, any leadership changes may bring different priorities that do not align with his creative plans. DC Studios operates as a separate division from Warner Bros. Pictures, yet collaboration with other Warner Bros. Discovery businesses like HBO remains complex and sometimes frustrating.
Challenges in Promotion and Coordination Within Warner Bros. Discovery
Gunn revealed some tension surrounding content management on HBO, where executives reportedly worry about an overabundance of superhero projects saturating the platform. When asked about the release of the first teaser for Lanterns, he admitted uncertainty, despite having seen a sneak peek.
“I think at least where it is now. But I have no clue…when that’s planned to be shown. With HBO, the marketing is so different than film,”
Gunn explained.
Looking Ahead: New Stories and Upcoming Releases
One highlighted upcoming project, Salvation, is intended as a fresh take on Dinosaur Island, a setting linked to the powerful entity known as The Centre from The New Frontier comics. This storyline is significant enough to justify assembling the Justice League, promising high stakes for the DCU’s future narratives. Fans can expect to see Man of Tomorrow in theaters on July 9, 2027, signaling the next step in Gunn’s evolving DC Universe vision.
