James Gunn Teases Lex Luthor’s Role in Man of Tomorrow

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has recently appeared on several YouTube channels, discussing Superman, Peacemaker season 2, and forthcoming DC Universe (DCU) projects. He revealed that he is nearing completion of the fourth draft of the Man of Tomorrow script while actively working on costume designs and other production elements.

During an interview with Go Read Some Comics, Gunn mentioned he is

building costumes and doing all this sort of stuff for Man of Tomorrow.

This remark confirmed that pre-production for the film is moving forward steadily.

Clarifying Connections Between Man of Tomorrow and Other DCU Stories

When asked by host Jenna about fan theories predicting plot details for Man of Tomorrow, Gunn said he hasn’t read anything so far. He suggested that fans might expect a closer tie between Man of Tomorrow and events from Peacemaker season 2 than actually exists, emphasizing that the film is

still very much its own thing.

Lex Luthor and Superman: Central Figures in the Story

Gunn confirmed that the title Man of Tomorrow references both Superman and Lex Luthor. According to him, the movie will lean more toward a narrative focused on Lex Luthor, with Kal-El’s Superman playing a secondary role. This shift in perspective indicates a Lex-centered storyline within the DCU.

Villain Speculation and Gunn’s Approach to the Antagonist

The identity of the film’s villain remains officially unannounced, although fans widely speculate Brainiac as the antagonist. Speaking to Emergency Awesome, Gunn declined to reveal specifics but stated he is

trying to make everything feel very different to what’s come before.

Gunn previously acknowledged the speculation around Brainiac after sharing the first page of the Man of Tomorrow script, which features the movie’s title accompanied by an X-ray of a human brain. Addressing Entertainment Weekly, he said,

Listen, of course I wasn’t unaware that when I posted the cover of the script that there was going to be discussion around that particular topic,

adding,

But I think we’ll hold off from what exactly is happening.

Hints from Behind the Scenes and Fan Theories

Fan theories about Brainiac’s involvement gained traction after an August documentary about Superman’s making showed storyboard glimpses. It included characters like Man of Steel, Supergirl, Krypto, and a visual resembling the top of Brainiac’s head. While this could have been a concept cut from the Superman film, many believe Brainiac is set for his DCU debut in Man of Tomorrow.

What Lies Ahead for Man of Tomorrow and the DCU

With James Gunn progressing steadily on the script and production elements, Man of Tomorrow is shaping up as a thought-provoking entry in the DCU, spotlighting Lex Luthor’s character. Gunn’s intent to differentiate this film from previous stories could signal a fresh, distinctive tone for the franchise’s future chapters. As anticipation grows, fans eagerly await further details about the villain and how the storyline will integrate with broader DCU narratives.
