Johnny Depp Returns as Scrooge in New Christmas Carol Film

Johnny Depp is set to make a notable return to cinema as he takes on the role of Ebenezer Scrooge in Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol, a fresh adaptation of Charles Dickens’ beloved 1843 novella. This project marks Depp’s first significant film appearance following his highly publicized legal dispute with Amber Heard.

Unique Creative Team Behind the Production

The film will be directed by Ti West, an independent horror filmmaker known for titles such as X, Pearl, and The House of the Devil. West’s involvement raises curiosity about whether this adaptation will embrace his characteristic suspenseful and intense style or adopt a more traditional tone. Andrea Riseborough, nominated for an Oscar for her role in To Leslie, has joined the cast, supporting Depp’s lead performance. The screenplay is written by Nathaniel Halpern, known for his work on Legion, with Emma Watts serving as producer. The film’s release date is scheduled for November 13, 2026.

Context Within the Popular Tradition of ‘A Christmas Carol’ Adaptations

A Christmas Carol is among the most enduring stories in literature, having inspired numerous adaptations over the past two centuries. It follows Ebenezer Scrooge, a miserly character who abhors Christmas, and his transformative encounters with the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future on Christmas Eve. These spirits reveal to him moments from his life and beyond, urging him to alter his cold-hearted behavior.

Another Version of ‘A Christmas Carol’ Also in Development

This new film arrives alongside another adaptation announced earlier this year. In June, Warner Bros. revealed a large-scale project handled by Robert Eggers, known for his holiday horror film Nosferatu. In Eggers’ retelling, Willem Dafoe, who also starred in Nosferatu, will portray Ebenezer Scrooge, offering a distinctly different interpretation of the classic character.
