Johnny Depp Returns as Scrooge in Ti West’s Ebenezer

Johnny Depp is set to make a notable Hollywood comeback by starring as Ebenezer Scrooge in Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol, a new film adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic 1843 novella. Paramount Pictures is currently in advanced negotiations to produce the movie, aiming for a release on November 13, 2026.

Ti West to Direct Horror Filmmaker’s Take on Dickens’ Tale

The project will be directed by Ti West, known for his work on the recent horror trilogy featuring Mia Goth: X, Pearl, and Maxxxine. The screenplay is written by Nathaniel Halpern, who created the Prime Video sci-fi series Tales from the Loop, with one episode from that series directed by West himself.

Supporting Cast and Roles Remain Under Wraps

Andrea Riseborough has been announced as a co-star, though her exact role is not yet disclosed. In previous adaptations of A Christmas Carol, key female characters frequently include Scrooge’s former fiancée Belle and Mrs. Cratchit, the spouse of Bob Cratchit, Scrooge’s loyal employee. There is also the possibility that Riseborough may take on one or more of the spirits guiding Scrooge through his transformational journey.

Film Description Emphasizes Dark, Supernatural Elements

The story is described as

“a thrilling ghost story set in Dickens’ London, following one man’s supernatural journey to face his past, present and future and fight for a second chance.”

This phrasing highlights the film’s focus on the haunting and redemptive themes central to Dickens’ original narrative.

Production Details and Release Competition

Emma Watts will produce the film, with Stephen Deuters and Jason Forman serving as executive producers. The planned November 2026 release will position Ebenezer against an untitled Blumhouse horror film, arriving shortly after Warner Bros.’ animated movie Cat in the Hat and just before Lionsgate’s star-studded Hunger Games prequel, Sunrise on the Reaping.

Significance of Depp’s Return to Major Studio Films

This project marks Johnny Depp’s first major-studio film since his legal battle with Amber Heard concluded in 2022. The jury found that Heard defamed Depp in a 2018 Washington Post op-ed alleging abuse, and although Heard appealed, the parties reached a settlement later that year. Since then, Depp has appeared in films such as Maïwenn’s 2023 French drama Jeanne du Barry and is preparing to direct Modì, Three Days on the Wing of Madness, starring Al Pacino, with a release scheduled for November 7, 2026.

Ongoing Projects and Collaborations

In addition to Ebenezer, Depp is starring in Day Drinker, directed by Marc Webb and marking his fourth collaboration with Penélope Cruz. Release details for this film have not yet been announced, but it follows Depp’s continued efforts to rebuild his career after several years away from large studio productions.
