Hugh Dillon, the co-creator of the acclaimed series Mayor of Kingstown, has shared insight into the ultimate direction for Taylor Sheridan Mayor of Kingstown. Since its debut on November 14, 2021, starring MCU actor Jeremy Renner, the show has garnered critical and commercial success on Paramount+. Recognized as one of Sheridan’s finest works, the series has steadily built a dedicated following.
Sheridan, who wrote or co-wrote the entire first season, has reduced his direct involvement in subsequent seasons. Dillon, however, continues contributing as a writer, recently authoring the episode titled
Captain of the S*** Out of Luck.
With the upcoming season 4 slated to be the darkest and most immersive yet, the series is moving toward a clear endpoint.
Insights From The Red Carpet: A Creative Partnership
In a ScreenRant interview ahead of the season 4 premiere, Dillon praised Sheridan’s unique ability to deconstruct worlds and characters. The two carefully planned the first season, and Dillon revealed that Sheridan has had a firm vision of the story’s conclusion from the outset. Dillon recounted their creative process and the strength of Sheridan’s foresight:
I had worked with Taylor. He was my mentor for years as an acting coach. He coached me on 75 episodes of television. So over years, we would talk about TV and what we could do if we got to do it ourselves and dream. And he was a dude who could take apart worlds and characters. If I go to his house with a script, he could scan it so quickly and understand it, absorb it, digest and then relay it to me that when we got to actually our own work, he saw where it was going to end. We had the beginning. We rocked that first episode. He wrote that in two days, and we had that whole first season. But he’s seen it through to where it does end, wherever that is down in the future. He always had the end in sight, and then he taught me to do that as I’m writing, I’m working on this show, is land the things you want to land, and then work backwards so know where it’s going to end.
We had it before, where we sold the script. Taylor had it. Taylor had it in his head. We talked about the whole thing goes, and this is where it’s going to end in whatever season it ends, but that’s part of what the fun was, because then we can fill in the rest of it, because we know where it’s ending.
This testimony highlights not only Sheridan’s long-term planning but also how his mentorship has influenced Dillon’s approach as a writer on the series, shaping the narrative with a destination firmly in mind.

Anticipating a Darker, More Intense Fourth Season
Dillon’s remarks strongly suggest that Mayor of Kingstown is marching toward the conclusion Sheridan envisioned. Even though the exact number of seasons remains undisclosed, the implication that a definitive ending looms points to significant developments ahead, possibly coinciding with Sheridan’s increased engagement.
The series has evolved into a deeply intelligent and immersive drama on streaming platforms, with the McLusky family at its core. As season 4 debuts on October 26, anticipation builds for major plot twists and seismic impacts that will shape the remaining episodes.
What Endgame Might Look Like for Mayor of Kingstown
Though the precise resolution is unknown, it aligns with the show’s tone to expect a bittersweet finale. Jeremy Renner’s character, Mike McLusky, has long struggled to maintain order in Kingstown, but escalating tensions hint at impending tragedy. The state of unrest and boiling conflict suggests that the coming chapters will test the series’ central characters as never before.
After the explosive climax of season 3, season 4 could be the pivotal point where chaos truly erupts, setting a foundation for potentially one final concluding season. While this has not been officially confirmed, both Sheridan and Dillon are focused on steering the story toward a satisfying and well-planned conclusion.
Main Cast Bringing Depth to the Series’ Complex Characters
Jeremy Renner leads the cast portraying Mike McLusky, a man caught in the turbulent dynamics of Kingstown. Alongside him, Hugh Dillon plays Ian Ferguson, adding critical layers to the narrative. Their portrayals contribute to the series’ intense, reflective tone, enhancing the show’s reputation for passion and determination.
