Johnny Depp Returns as Scrooge in 2026 Christmas Carol

Paramount Pictures is finalizing a deal with Johnny Depp to star as Ebenezer Scrooge in a new film adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic story, set for release on November 13, 2026. The project, titled Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol, marks Depp’s return to a major studio film and reunites him with acclaimed director Ti West, known for his atmospheric work on the X trilogy.

Depp to Lead in Dark Adaptation of Dickens’ Classic

Johnny Depp will embody the role of Ebenezer Scrooge, the infamous miser whose life transforms after encounters with supernatural visitors. Alongside Depp, Oscar-nominated actress Andrea Riseborough has joined the cast in a key role that has not yet been revealed. The film aims to deliver a fresh take on this familiar story under Ti West’s direction, with a script penned by Nathaniel Halpern.

Paramount describes the new adaptation as

“a thrilling ghost story set in Dickens’ London, following one man’s supernatural journey to face his past, present and future and fight for a second chance,”

indicating West will likely bring his signature moody and intense style to the holiday tale. Emma Watts is producing, with Stephen Deuters and Jason Forman attached as executive producers.

The Project’s Development and Studio Backing

Negotiations to bring Depp and West together began before Skydance’s acquisition of Paramount, causing a brief pause as the new management reviewed pending projects. Despite that, insiders say the Depp-West collaboration was considered

“too hot not to pick up.”

The film’s development signifies a strong vote of confidence in the pairing’s ability to revitalize a well-known story with a darker edge.

This will be Johnny Depp’s first major studio release since 2018’s Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. In the interim, Depp has focused on independent films and recently completed shooting the Lionsgate thriller Day Drinker, co-starring Penélope Cruz, which is also slated for a 2026 release.

Depp’s Role Fits His Legendary Film Persona

The choice of Depp as Scrooge aligns with the actor’s history of portraying eccentric and memorable characters, ranging from Captain Jack Sparrow and the Mad Hatter to Ichabod Crane and Willy Wonka. Taking on Scrooge allows Depp to explore a deep character of transformation and redemption, a natural challenge for his versatility and dramatic range.

Multiple Adaptations Reflect Dickens’ Timeless Influence

Interestingly, Depp’s involvement comes as director Robert Eggers is also developing his own version of A Christmas Carol for Warner Bros., reportedly with Willem Dafoe considered for the role of Scrooge. Dickens’ story has inspired countless adaptations, from Alastair Sim’s 1951 portrayal to Jim Carrey’s performance in the 2009 motion-capture film, underscoring its enduring cultural resonance.

Production Plans and Anticipated Impact

Production on Paramount’s film is expected to commence in early 2026, setting the stage for a theatrical release just before the holiday season. This new interpretation looks to captivate audiences with a blend of suspense, supernatural elements, and heartfelt storytelling that explores the themes of second chances and the true spirit of Christmas.

Paramount’s investment in Johnny Depp and the creative vision of Ti West highlight the studio’s intent to deliver a distinctive version of a beloved tale. The film’s dark tone and Depp’s return to a major role carry significant anticipation, promising to refresh the legacy of Dickens’ classic for contemporary viewers.
