Director Jon M. Chu has confirmed that a television adaptation of Crazy Rich Asians is officially underway. The production team has completed scripts and is currently awaiting green light to begin filming. This new series is expected to feature much of the original cast, continuing the story introduced in the 2018 film.
TV Series Will Draw from China Rich Girlfriend Novel
Chu revealed in an interview with Esquire that the show is actively progressing at HBO Max.
It’s a real thing. We have scripts, and we’re waiting to be officially ready to go.
The series will be inspired by Kevin Kwan’s second book, China Rich Girlfriend, which will expand on characters fans met in the movie while developing fresh storylines.
The director emphasized that adapting the books for television presents challenges because
our characters changed so much in the first movie,
meaning the series will not be a direct follow of the novels.
It’s so different [from] the books, actually, even though it feels like it’s the same,
Chu explained.
You couldn’t go one-to-one. But we can use a lot of inspiration from the book to dig out more story from it.
Original Cast Expected to Return, Led by Constance Wu and Henry Golding
While an official announcement is pending, Chu confirmed the original ensemble will likely reprise their roles, including Constance Wu as Rachel Chu and Henry Golding as Nick Young. The series will be overseen by Crazy Rich Asians screenwriter Adele Lim, who serves as showrunner and executive producer alongside Chu and Kevin Kwan, the author of the source material. The collaboration aims to maintain continuity while deepening the narrative.
Series Complements Film Sequel and Builds on 2018 Movie’s Success
According to Deadline, this television project will not replace the anticipated sequel film but will exist alongside it to broaden the story universe. The 2018 Crazy Rich Asians film earned over $239 million worldwide and received a Golden Globe nod for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. It follows Rachel Chu, an NYU professor, as she discovers her boyfriend Nick’s heritage as part of one of Singapore’s richest families.
Jon M. Chu’s Other Upcoming Projects
Alongside this development, Chu is preparing several other films. His new musical Wicked: For Good is scheduled for release on November 21. He is also working on adaptations for Hot Wheels and Oh, the Places You’ll Go!, showing his continued involvement in high-profile productions across genres.
