David Corenswet’s Superman to Reuse Iconic Costume in 2027 Film

Superman is set to return to cinemas in 2027 with the upcoming film Man of Tomorrow, featuring David Corenswet as the Man of Steel. This sequel to James Gunn’s Superman will focus on an unusual partnership between Clark Kent and his longtime adversary, Lex Luthor, against a new threat. One key detail generating interest among fans is the possibility that Superman’s costume from the 2025 movie will be reused for this next chapter.

When James Gunn revealed Man of Tomorrow, various pieces of official artwork surfaced, created by well-known comic book artists such as Jim Lee. These illustrations showed Superman wearing the same suit seen in the earlier 2025 Superman film. Since the art was promotional and stylized, it remained unclear if the costume would remain unchanged or if a redesign was planned. Recent developments, however, suggest that the original costume could indeed make a comeback.

The Superman suits displayed at the Warner Bros. Studio Tour Hollywood as part of the Superman Exhibit have been a draw since May. Recently, though, enthusiasts noticed that the Man of Steel’s iconic costume was no longer on display. A photo shared on the r/DCU subreddit by user r/M00r3C documents this change, showing a sign in place of the suit that reads:

While there is a chance the image or message might not be authentic, the r/DCU subreddit is generally a reliable source within the community. There is also the possibility that the costume is being borrowed for another project unrelated to the DC Universe films, such as a commercial or promotional event. However, assuming the notice is accurate and pertains to a major DC Studios project, this strongly suggests that the suit is needed for Man of Tomorrow’s production.

Why the Same Costume Might Be Used for Man of Tomorrow

With Man of Tomorrow being the primary DCU film preparing for production soon, the notice likely refers to this sequel rather than an unrelated project. Although Clayface is another upcoming DC character with a film in production, it seems less plausible for the costume to be linked to that movie, especially since Clayface is not traditionally a Superman villain. Therefore, it is reasonable to infer that Clark Kent will wear the same Superman suit shown in the 2025 film for at least part of Man of Tomorrow.

It is important to clarify that Man of Tomorrow has not officially begun filming; it remains in pre-production and is expected to start shooting in summer 2026. Having the costume temporarily removed from the exhibit aligns with preparations often undertaken by costume departments during pre-production phases of large-scale films. These efforts typically involve tailoring wardrobe needs and making final adjustments before cameras roll.

Some might question why a blockbuster project wouldn’t simply create a new costume instead of using one on public display. The reality is that superhero suits for major productions can be prohibitively expensive to produce. For context, Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man suits reportedly cost around $50,000 each back in 2002, and multiple versions are often required for filming. Given this, reusing high-quality costumes from previous productions can represent considerable savings on wardrobe expenses.

The decision to reuse the same suit would also set Man of Tomorrow apart from common industry trends. Most superhero franchises prefer to update or redesign costumes with every new film to emphasize progression or simply refresh the character’s look. For example, Spider-Man has sported new outfits in every installment, Superman’s suit saw modifications between Man of Steel and Batman v Superman, and Iron Man’s armor evolved constantly. Even Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy featured significant armor upgrades between films. Maintaining the same costume across two Superman movies would be a notable exception.

Challenges Behind Designing Superman’s Costume

Superman’s costume design for the 2025 film was a complex and carefully considered task. During a set visit, James Gunn commented on the challenges surrounding the iconic look, especially regarding the traditional trunks, which had to work convincingly in live-action. His thoughts conveyed the intention behind Superman’s appearance as more than just a costume, but a symbol:

We were trying on all these different versions, and we screened-tested with trunks and no trunks. And one of the things David said is that, Superman wants kids to not be afraid of him. He’s an alien. He’s got these incredible powers. He shoots beams out of his eyes… He’s this incredibly powerful—could be considered scary—individual, and he wants people to like him. He wants to be a symbol of hope and positivity. So he dresses like a professional wrestler. He dresses in a way that makes people unafraid of him, that shows that hope, that shows that positivity. And that really clicked in for me. And I think trying to pretend that Superman’s costume doesn’t have some frivolity to it at its base, trying to make it look serious is silly, because he is a superhero. He’s the first one, brightly colored and that’s who he is.

— James Gunn, Director

This insight helps explain why the costume might not see significant alterations for Man of Tomorrow — the design fulfills a narrative purpose just as much as a visual one.

Looking Ahead to Man of Tomorrow’s Release

Man of Tomorrow is scheduled to premiere on July 9, 2027, continuing the evolving DC Studios universe. The prospect of David Corenswet’s Superman wearing the same costume from the earlier film not only reflects financial and practical considerations, but also preserves a symbolic and carefully crafted look that aims to embody hope and accessibility to audiences. Fans and observers will be watching closely as production progresses, eager to see whether the Man of Steel maintains his recognizable appearance in this new story.
