DC Studios is preparing to deepen its exploration of Batman’s world with a new R-rated film focused on one of Gotham’s complex villains, ahead of the planned reboot for the Caped Crusader. James Gunn Batman Movie fans can anticipate the big-screen arrival of Clayface, a character set to debut in 2026, with Tom Rhys Harries portraying the shapeshifting villain Matt Hagen.
The Clayface project is currently in production and promises to portray the character through a darker, more tragic lens consistent with some comic interpretations. Gunn recently marked the character’s comic anniversary on X, expressing enthusiasm for the upcoming film and the actor bringing the role to life. The DC Studios co-CEO stated,
“Happy Anniversary to the perennially misunderstood villain, Clayface.”
He added,
“can’t wait for you to see @TomRhysHarries bring him to life on the big screen!”
Tragic Origins and Dark Themes Shape Clayface’s Story
Clayface has historically been a shapeshifter in various DC animated adaptations, often depicted as a dangerous foe to Batman. However, some portrayals delve into his tragic background as an actor disfigured in an attempt to salvage his failing career, which turns him into an adversary of Gotham City’s hero. The 2026 film, part of DCU’s Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters, aims to explore this tragic transformation through a body-horror lens.
Mike Flanagan, who penned the Clayface screenplay, revealed that the story draws significant inspiration from the two-part episode Feat of Clay from Batman: The Animated Series. In an interview, Flanagan explained,

“Of course it was. I mean that is the perfect [story], ‘Feat of Clay,’ Ron Perlman, to me, that’s it. That two-parter knocked me out. The short answer is that is absolutely what inspired my script. That is the world I wanted to live in. Batman: The Animated Series when I was growing up was my Batman. As much as [Michael] Keaton was my Batman, The Animated Series really was my Batman.”
Potential Future Role for Clayface in DC Universe
James Gunn’s description of Clayface as a “perennially misunderstood villain” hints that the movie might also reflect the character’s inclusion in the Bat-Family during the DC Rebirth era, where he served as an ally to Batman. This suggests that Tom Rhys Harries’ portrayal of Matt Hagen may extend beyond the Clayface film, potentially establishing him as a recurring presence in the rebooted DC Universe.
Principal photography for the Clayface movie began on August 31, 2025, under the direction of James Watkins. The film includes notable cast members such as Naomi Ackie and Max Minghella, alongside Eddie Marsan, balancing the horror elements with a more nuanced character-driven narrative. Scheduled for release in theaters on September 11, 2026, the film will be the third installment in the ongoing DCU film timeline.
Although details about Clayface’s future chapters within DC’s cinematic universe remain undisclosed, fans and audiences may watch for narrative clues throughout the film that will connect to broader story arcs.
