Cinemark is expanding its IMAX offerings in the United States and South America by adding multiple new 70mm IMAX screens ahead of the release of Christopher Nolan’s film The Odyssey in 2026. This move will include the installation of rare 70-millimeter film projectors, catering to audiences eager for premium cinematic experiences.
Expansion of IMAX Projection Systems Across Key Theaters
Under a recently extended agreement between Cinemark and IMAX Corporation, the theater chain will add three new 70mm film projection systems and four IMAX with Laser systems in the U.S. In addition, the remaining twelve IMAX screens within Cinemark’s circuit will be upgraded to the latest IMAX with Laser technology, which offers 4K laser projection for enhanced image clarity and superior audio through proprietary methods.
The new 70mm IMAX film projectors will be installed at Cinemark Seven Bridges in Woodridge, a Chicago suburb; Cinemark Carefree Circle in Colorado Springs; and Cinemark Tinseltown in Rochester. Cinemark currently operates one IMAX 70mm film location at Cinemark Webb Chapel in Dallas. All three new locations are targeted to be fully operational before Nolan’s The Odyssey premieres in theaters on July 17, 2026. This expansion is significant because fewer than 30 theaters globally can project the full IMAX 70mm film format, marking Cinemark’s commitment to offering this premium experience to more viewers.

IMAX Leadership Highlights Partnership and Future Plans
Rich Gelfond, CEO of IMAX, emphasized the company’s dedication to delivering the best cinematic technology.
“Cinemark expanding its commitment to the very best of what IMAX has to offer — both IMAX with Laser and IMAX 70mm film — underscores the value we’re delivering for our exhibition partners in today’s marketplace,”
he stated. Gelfond added,
“With a tremendous slate ahead in 2026 highlighted by a number of Filmed for IMAX and IMAX 70mm film releases, we look forward to working with Cinemark to deliver the most immersive cinematic experiences to its customers and growing the value of our longstanding partnership.”
IMAX’s premium large-format screens have seen growing demand as moviegoers increasingly seek experiences that distinguish theater visits from home viewing. Directors such as Christopher Nolan and Denis Villeneuve have been vocal advocates for the impact of presenting their films on large, bright screens, fueling audience interest in these formats.
Cinemark’s Strategic Commitment to Enhanced Moviegoing
Sean Gamble, president and CEO of Cinemark, highlighted how these upgrades are part of the company’s broader goal to offer differentiated movie experiences. He explained that they
“reflect our commitment to delivering high-quality, differentiated experiences that drive greater value perception, loyalty, and frequency across all types of films.”
Gamble also expressed enthusiasm about the renewed collaboration with IMAX.
“We’re pleased to expand our partnership with IMAX as part of our broader strategy to offer a range of elevated cinematic experiences across our circuit,”
he said. He added,
“Upgrading our IMAX locations to IMAX with Laser and activating additional 70mm film systems further expands and enhances the immersive options we offer our guests.”
Significance of the 70mm IMAX Release for Nolan’s Film
The arrival of The Odyssey as the first theatrical film shot completely on IMAX film symbolizes a notable moment in cinema technology and distribution. Cinemark’s investment in 70mm IMAX screens reflects both the growing appetite for premium formats and the influence of directors like Christopher Nolan, who champion traditional film projection methods alongside modern digital enhancements. This development is expected to elevate the viewing experience for audiences across major U.S. markets and beyond, strengthening Cinemark’s position in the competitive exhibition landscape while enriching access to rare film formats.
