Jennifer Lawrence Opens Up on Struggling with Interviews and Backlash

Jennifer Lawrence has recently revealed her difficulties with press interactions while promoting her films, highlighting how the intense scrutiny affected her over the years. The Oscar-winning actress, who has been in the public eye for over 15 years, shared her conflicted feelings about interviews and the backlash she has faced throughout her career, underscoring the challenges behind her public image.

Lawrence’s Difficult Relationship with Press Interviews

Lawrence expressed reluctance toward interviews, explaining how they make her feel distanced from her craft. She shared,

“Every time I do an interview, I think, ‘I can’t do this to myself again.’ I feel like I lose so much control over my craft when I have to do press for a movie.”

The actress described her earlier interviews as overly energetic and now embarrassing in hindsight, stating,

“Oh, no. So hyper. So embarrassing.”

Initially admired for her candid and relatable personality, Lawrence’s public image shifted as some accused her of being disingenuous. She reflected on her spontaneous style during interviews as partly a protective tactic, confessing,

“Well, it is, or it was, my genuine personality, but it was also a defense mechanism, to just be, like, ‘I’m not like that! I poop my pants every day!’ … I look at those interviews, and that person is annoying. I get why seeing that person everywhere would be annoying. Ariana Grande’s impression of me on ‘SNL’ was spot-on.”

Public Backlash and Personal Impact

The public critique became overwhelming for Lawrence, who described the experience as “uninhabitable.” She added,

“I felt — I didn’t feel, I was, I think — rejected not for my movies, not for my politics, but for me, for my personality.”

This emotional strain contributed to her decision to step back from the spotlight completely for two years after a demanding period in which she made 16 films within six years, some of which underperformed commercially, fueling further negativity.

In 2021, during an interview with Vanity Fair, Lawrence opened up about the toll this phase took on her mindset:

“I just think everybody had gotten sick of me. I’d gotten sick of me. It had just gotten to a point where I couldn’t do anything right. If I walked a red carpet, it was, ‘Why didn’t she run?’”

She went on to say,

“I was people-pleasing for the majority of my life. Working made me feel like nobody could be mad at me: ‘Okay, I said yes, we’re doing it. Nobody’s mad.’ And then I felt like I reached a point where people were not pleased just by my existence. So that kind of shook me out of thinking that work or your career can bring any kind of peace to your soul.”

Finding Peace and Returning to Work

Lawrence has recently expressed a sense of acceptance regarding her hiatus from Hollywood. In a conversation on The Graham Norton Show, she indicated that staying away from the industry brought her some tranquility:

“[Hollywood] is a lot. … I think I would have been [okay], but also I would’ve been really upset. I don’t know.”

She has now resumed promotional activities for Die My Love, a psychological drama directed by Lynne Ramsay, co-starring Robert Pattinson. The film, which examines the unraveling life of a woman juggling marriage and motherhood, premiered at Cannes earlier this year.

The project was personally championed by Martin Scorsese, who encouraged Lawrence to take on a more challenging role, moving beyond comfortable characters. Scorsese explained,

“I said, ‘You know what? This is a challenge,’”

and added,

“‘This is the kind of thing you should be doing. Go take a chance. Knock any sense of a comfortable character off the board and just go for it.’”

Next Steps for Lawrence and Upcoming Film Release

Die My Love is scheduled for theatrical release by Mubi on November 7. As Lawrence engages with the press once again amid this new phase of her career, her candid reflections offer insight into the emotional cost of fame and the complexities behind her unfiltered public persona. Fans and observers can expect to see this transformative performance as Lawrence navigates a carefully chosen role that challenges her past image while embracing artistic growth.
